Scrimmage a college team???

Curious... one of the local coaches has said in his tryout posting that he has arranged for his team to scrimmage with several local college teams. We've got a couple of D1's, a D2, 1 NAIA, and a JC locally. Is that even allowed under the rules?? Or is this guy full of squirrel scat?

College teams are generally limited with the amount of time during the year they can scrimmage/practice based on DI, II, or III. It would seem odd that they would use some of that time to paly a TB team. Perhaps he was talking about scrimmaging a team of current college players?

Might be a 23U team with college kids playing on it, i.e. not all from the same college. A couple of JC's in our area the kids come together in the summer, form a 23U select team and go out and play people. Both of these are allowed. I believe the coach is allowed to sit the stands and watch, as long as the venue is public and they are not coaching the players.

My DD's College team scrimmaged the Birmingham Thunderbolts during this past fall as part of their fall schedule. I think it was actually a four team "friendly" with colleges and the T-Bolts.

Not sure about the compliance issues, but perhaps if it is run as a college camp with live scrimmages, it might be allowed.

We scrimmaged Jucos - other travel teams did it, rules on Jucos are possibly looser than other classifications.

DD's former TB club scrimmaged a juco and a DIII (and beat both). I've never understood what was in it for the college team...

I see it as a free recruiting for the college teams.

I wouldn't see what was in it for your TB club. Losses are the best form of "what do we need to improve upon".

Here in AZ, almost all of our JCs play fall scrimmages with each other and the local 18u/GOLD travel teams. The talent level of our JCs vary widely and it is not uncommon for the TB clubs to beat the JCs.

There is also a fall "tournament" held in conjunction with a college umpire camp where the TB teams play the JC teams. It's not a tournament, per say, but more a series of scrimmage games in a more formal atmosphere.

It want a big deal here - I thought we would and we did beat the jucos that we played, we had several D1 kids on our travel team, but what I hoped was that the juco coaches would take a second look at some of my kids and maybe they would get a chance to jump start their college softball career.
