[quoteThis tangent aside, Obama knew beforehand how this would come across. He is not Joe Biden. This wasnt a careless mental mistake of any kind. This was a trial balloon, floated in Ireland, and will be used later in a "We cant allow the cause of what's happened in Ireland to occur here in the US."

He has already gone after the 1st Amendment and the Catholic Church via ObamaCare (http://www.forbes.com/sites/charleskadl ... ic-church/). Ireland is just a preview of what is yet to come.][/quote]

I think you are stretching it a bit. I do think it was an inapproriate, even somewhat rude remark. He is actually right, Catholic and Protestant social institutions helped perpetuate huge social rifts that remained in Northern Ireland (until about a decade ago) , but just because he was right doens not mean he should say it. Also, this was Northern Ireland(not Ireland)

As far as the other issues- when it comes to the true religious intsitutions(Catholic charities, Notre Dame, Georgetown) I think Oboma is dead wrong and it will not pass the 1st Amendment test- for other comapnies that do not have a direct religious affiliation it will probably be a different story

I am not stretching anything. You are over-simplifying 5 centuries of conflict.

This "division" didnt start because of religious differences, and it doesnt continue because of religious differences. It started because an Anglican Britain invaded and colonized a Catholic Ireland. Since the formation of the Anglican Church had little to do with religious views, and everything to do with power, there really is no way to make this a religious issue.

This was Irish nationalism vs British unionism. The unionists were the majority in the north, and protestant. The Catholics in those 6 districts favored nationalism, or republicanism, and were the minority. They have been at odds since the 16th century.

Politics should always be looked at in the context of history, but unfortunately history bores most people. This sets up Obama perfectly, as he lives to play on the ignorance of people, including many in the media.

Factor in today's humanist environment, and attacking anything remotely associated with God is the easy play. But it isnt about God or religion of any kind. Its about power.

I never said it started with religion, but several of the institutions(including protestant and catholic schools) helped to perpetuate the seperate groups and isolated them from each other.

I for one am not bored by history-quite the opposite. I do agree that most people are ignorant of it - including(or especially) politicians. Oboma should have known the context and background of what he was saying- just as Bush should have known how the term Crusader can be taken in some parts

As a child, didn't he go to a Madrassa school, don't his daughters go to a Quaker school? His words are a prelude of things to come, it was an attack on the Catholic Church and Christianity. This man is not accidental in his comments.

There is no comparison to what Obama said and Bush using the term Crusader. Boy JR, you are always first in line to defend the Muslim religion and careful not to hurt their ultra sensitive feelings.

The seperate schools and institutions that helped to seperate and isolate catholics and prtestants from each other were a key part in the continued problems and troubles that they had in the past. You guys really need to read these things thoroughly first- I HATE having to be put in a position to defend Obama- he does so many other things wrong, can't you just stick to those?

Pale Rider- had the IRA had Youtube, I am sure some of their assasinations and bombings would have found there way there too

Brits been screwing over the Irish and Scots for centuries...tried it with the heathens in America...we kicked their asses out..Give the screwing a religious overture if you wish...But compared to Islamic escapades, IRA looks like Telletubbies....

That is factually incorrect. The problem in Northern Ireland was due to Protestant discrimination against Catholics that stemmened from Home Rule. The Protestant vs Catholic thing wasnt religious based, but more ethnic based. Protestants generally descended from Scots and Brits (thus loyal to the Union), while the Catholics had come from Germany and wanted a free and united Ireland.

The way religion factored in to this was because of the Crown's intolerance for freedom of religion, dating back over 100 years. That should ring a bell as you are closer to Plymouth Rock than I am.
