Okay, maybe not the worst call, but the worst one I have ever seen.
B1 hits ball between SS and 3rd that SS makes a great stop but throws off balance over the first baseman’s glove. The fast B1 beat the throw anyway. Alert RF did her job of backup and held B1 to a single. Next batter strikes out for the first out of the inning and R1 steals 2nd. Next batter walks. With runners on first and second, next batters attempts to bunt runners forward. Play was made at 3rd on R1 but was clearly safe. Now the bases are loaded with one out, and during the next batters plate appearance, the pitcher throws a wild pitch. All base runners take off and catcher flips ball to pitcher to make a play at the plate. Plate umpire calls her safe. Defensive coach appeals that 3rd base runner left early and should be called out. Umpires confer and base umpire says, and I quote, “She didn’t leave early, but, she can’t be safe because I called her out at first base three batters ago.” You think that didn’t open a can of worms? Lots of questions were asked and answered but the best one was when the field umpire was asked, Why didn’t you remove the girl from the field if in fact you did call her out, instead, you move to the next umpiring position? His response was, It’s not my job to keep track of the girls on the bases. WOW!!! After umpires looked at three scorebooks showing the girl was safe at first, they decided to allow her run to score but she would still be recorded as an out at first base. That’s when our scorekeeper handed his scorebook to the umpires and said, “Put that down in my book, because I have no idea how to record that.” After the arguing settled down, the umpires decided to call her out at first base and not allow her run. We were up by 12 runs in the second inning, so our coach just shook his head and said, fine, lets just play. The game resumed and we won in the next inning. Maybe not the worst call, but it has to be close to it. We were joking that we should start the next inning with the bases loaded since the field ump already told us that his job was not to keep track of the girls on the bases.
