What's on your mind?

new on bucket and it appears I am a lone wolf (Floridian)on the hunt for true softball insight. I would love to hear more about views pertaining to FL softball or should that be a new post?

This still has a lot of the discussion. It looks like a few posts have since been deleted. There was a bit of back and forth between pro and con side.

I was referring to an incident that happened at the University of Florida last year. Several players were forced to leave the team. I am like most others, I don’t know what actually happened, but they supposedly caused some problems for the team. Many people said the players would not be able to find another good college team, because no one would want to take a chance on them. I believe one is at Missouri, and one is at Arizona - I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure they were large Div. 1 schools.

I just believe that even though softball may not make money for a college, I don’t know of a coach at that level that doesn’t want to win. It doesn’t matter that their job may not be on the line, they want to win. Saying no coach would ever go after a player that has verballed just doesn’t ring true to me. That is just my opinion. And, if a player, (or mainly the parents) are smart, they won’t go around bragging to the world about being offered a verbal in the first place. Especially, if the kid is 14 or 15.

But you understand there is a flow to recruiting. You can see that play out on UMassFan correct? That when a school announces 3-4 they are pretty much running out of money. Yes if they have a senior class of 7, they may get more, but most coaches try to smooth out the bubbles in their system. And you see that like schools, schools at a certain level in the recruiting flow all announce their 3-4 very close to each other, correct?

Yes, if you are a good player, and your not picked up when your group goes through, you may still find a spot. You may agree to a deal of zero in the first year, and 1/2's for three. Or find a school who had a recruit that got away, and has not yet found a fit. But you are in a bit of a scramble mode, once the schools at your level announce their 3-4.

I very much appreciate everyone else’s input. That is why I visit this site. If I disagree with someone, I try to take in what they say, and see if I am not understanding things clearly, or if it’s just the fact that we disagree. And, I have learned in my old age, sometimes people simply will not agree, and that’s okay.

I see things from my perspective, and from my experiences. Many, many, years ago, when I went through this process, these things seemed so unimportant to me. I am amazed at how little I remember about the important stuff that went on when I was 17-18-19. Now, I am coming back around with my own dd, and I want to put her in the best position to succeed, and for her to be reasonably happy. I have most definitely learned (from my own experience) how things can go if you get yourself into a situation that you are extremely unhappy with.

I am getting the feeling that either in California as a whole, or maybe just a high percentage of the posters, are approaching recruiting one way, and I feel it could be done differently. We are not highly dependent on one coach or organization, so maybe that is where some of the difference is. I know what you are saying about UMassFan, but the coaches that I know always have a way to make things work - if they want it. However, I do appreciate the insight as to being able to see what a particular school has in the “pipeline”. I had not thought of that.

I think some of it is just the internet age. Before the internet and Heybucket (or eteamz it successor). There was no UMassFan list.

Within 24 hours after my kid verballed we called each of the other schools we were in serious discussions with (3 or 4). We told them thank you very much for your interest, we wish you all the best but our kid has chosen another university. Each of those coaches responded with grace and class and wished her well. After that we were approached by one coach. I think he knew she had verballed. No other coach approached us/her after that. Now, given her age when she verballed it would seem somewhat inexplicable that no other coach at any level would be interested in her after she verballed. Not even a JC like the one in Kansas that contacted us prior to her verbal. Maybe things are different now.

BTW, back in the day college coaches went through travel coaches/managers to get to the kid. Regardless of whether the parent has bragged or told no one the travel rep would usually tell the college coach that the kid has already verballed. Maybe things are different now.

Mean absolutely nothing negative about your post Vess. Just providing real world experiences that I hope adds to people's recruiting knowledge base. I wish you and yours the best of luck.

Contrary experiences/posts are strongly encouraged.

John

Same experience - 4 schools that we had talked to a lot or did visits. The interesting thing is that one of the coaches - who told us that he did not believe in early verbals - he defined that as not before beginning of senior year - was upset. While she didn't have a first choice , the school that her oldest brother and sister both went to offered, and she decided to accept it (December of her junior year) before the deadline , one of the coaches was upset and explained his opposition (which has been really stated in the entire post over and over) to early verballing. We were both on the phone, I considered him a friend and still do, and we explained our choice. I noticed 2 years later when his school knocked our school out of the WCWS regionals, he made a point to come up and talk to her after the game and wish her well.

Had an unsolicited conversation today regarding a girl who committed to a SEC school as a FR...now a JR and worried because they still do not know exactly what the offer is and all other schools have long since quit calling.

I am sure there is a better way to manage it from the player and parents...but all of the leverage is with the schools.

Again, I do not pretend to know the answer - I am sure it is much more difficult than can be figured out in a few posts...but it is sad to think about how much pressure and frustration can be involved in chasing a dream.

In some ways, I am glad my 2014 DD is still uncommited. Has a negative impact on her psyche at times, but I think when she finally is able to commit it will be with both sides of the party fully committed.

I suspect they do not have a deal. Everyone I know that ended up with a deal, heard from their coaches on a regular basis. Once a month at the least. Those that did not, turns out they had a surprise.

I would have thought those terms would have been discussed when the verbal committing was happening. I can see how the kid maybe would not ask the coach, but it is absolutely the parents responsibility to ask the coach.

Also agree with AI as well. All of the kids I know with a verbal speak to the coaches of their respective schools at least once every couple of weeks. I could see how you could go a month or so maybe during their season, with times not matching up, but years and confirmation on the deal? Doesn't sound very good, which is sad situation for the kid.
