Grapettes Tournament Information

March 2 - 3, 2013

This is the Grapettes first tournament and is for the 10U, 12U & 14U's only. We can accept up to 24 teams. Games will be played at Louis Park in Stockton. In the 14U division the California Grapettes will pay $1000.00 cash to the first place winner of this tournament to use for their travel fund.

We will also pay $250.00 in cash to the second place team to use for their travel fund.

In the 12U division the California Grapettes will pay $500.00 cash to the first place winner of this tournament to use for their travel fund.

We will also pay $250.00 in cash to the second place team to use for their travel fund.

There MUST be a minimum of 12 Teams in both the 12U and the 14U division to receive the travel funds.

WOW!! Roy the tournament director coming out strong! I wonder about the teams signed up for Gary's ASA tournament that weekend will do. Do you go for the T-SHIRTS in the Gold, Silver and Bronze Division or the CASH.. Guess that means 2 12 Grapettes teams just dropped out of the ASA tourney. Went from 30 teams to 28 fast.. And one each from the 10u and 14u will also go. DO YOU GO FOR THE CASH? LETS SEE WHO CHANGES TOURNAMENTS..

Warning...Objects on your monitor may not be in the tournament you sent your money in for 3 weeks early. Check back 1 week before first pitch. Then check back 72 hours before first pitch.

What the heck does that mean? Or is this just more grapettes trash talk from a guy without pants around his waist?

And you also posted the teams that are signed up for "Gary's" tournament? maybe you can make a banner for Gary too, or take out a radio ad? Or do you think Gary's tournament is "the grapes" tournament?

You all realize that 1000$ for the travel fund works out to about 60$ a family. yes sir, you too can go spend a weekend in Stockton and IF you win it all, you get a 60$ reimbursement. Hey, its better than a shirt, but again, its frikin stockton and its 60 bucks.

p.s. No one is going to ruin anyone at anytime during your softball run! So typical of the grapettes younger divisions.

In March, April, and May, the ONLY thing teams should be worrying about is developing their players and making them better. Dont worry about where the other team is playing, dont worry about the other guy traveling to socal, just evaluate YOUR team and where they are at the present time and do what you need to do to get better.


Playing some avg teams is a way to get BETTER this early in the season. So where you are located should be the primary factor in where you decide to play... but I know that is not what teams do.

One of our teams beat someone pretty good over the past few weeks, and we have MUCH to work on. And yet that team we beat is heading down to socal to play with the big boys soon. Now what are they gonna get out of that as a young team?? Well, they are gonna cost their parents 500 bucks and they are going to come home no better than they were when we played them. Makes NO SENSE to me. But hey, they can put on their web site that they are traveling to socal 5 times this season, they are going to be in ALL of the major tourneys and blah blah blah.

And if you think 1k is something to raise your nose to, then your team is LOADED.

Funny, some of the stuff I am seeing taking place now, I was clamoring for YEARS ago. Competition is a good thing.

By the way, the number of teams playing in friendlies continues to rise each season. Norcal is going to look like socal soon (as far as number of tourneys being played in)

I am actually shocked at the number of friendlies teams DON'T TRY and go after??? I guess the double header is taboo in fastpitch? Why not play two seven inning games and be good with it? You can't even say with the tournament you're getting more games in either because they aren't even full games. Let's be honest on a Saturday a lot of games don't go past 5 innings. That's 15 innings of work. Call up your favorite nemesis and play 14 innings. No gate fee. BBQ friendly. Host team pays the blue(s) and you have a game. Why doesn't this happen more often?

I know the older age groups are going to say "it's about exposure." The younger age groups don't have an excuse other than they want to win a tournament?

When I did 14u only, we would have a 4 team friendly, I charged each team 30 dollars per game to cover the umpire, prepped the fields, and fed ALL PLAYERS and PARENTS of the team that came. We played 3 games 90 minute drop dead.

i was not looking for profit, I was looking for games. That is what friendly is. 60 dollars per game is not a "Friendly" IMO.

I could not agree more with Iluvblue. Friendlies really should not be about "fundraising". Tournaments are fundraisers. If you are hosting a one day friendly with more than four teams aren't you really hosting a 1 day "showcase" format (minus the college coaches) tournament. You probably will not play more than three games in a day, so any teams above four are really for what purpose? Please don't misunderstand me, I think playing in friendlies during this time of year is fantastic and a way to reduce team costs. We travel both north and south and by playing in friendlies we not only reduce the cost of our entry fees, but in most cases, the families do not need to get a hotel for the night. I even think $50 to $60 a game is not outrageous. However, I only see the costs continuing to increase and then this format won't be as viable as it is now.

My biggest concern about playing for "Cash" awards is how coaches and parents are going to react to the very rare incorrect call of an umpire. I have felt the sting of leaving a tournament after having felt a call cost the team a chance to advance. Can you imagine how some fans and coaches may react if they feel they were "cheated" out of a $1000, might even be worse if you feel the call was a "homer" situation and the host team benefits. Not sure this is something I would want to mess with. Something about losing out on "Cash" just may sting more than not getting a "Tshirt".

I just noticed ASA doesn't allow cash prize give aways in ASA sanctioned events. That's too bad as I thought it was a great idea.

The cash "credit" to future Grapettes tournaments is a pretty good way to still save teams some money.
