At what point do you see that what man does has any effect on his environment ? Where is the line ?
1.) You have 5 nice shade trees in your yard, you cut down one ... Is your yard warmer ? You cut down two, is your yard warmer ? 3 ? 4? 5 ? More than half of the worlds forests weren't needed ?
2.) Companies spew what ever pollutants they want into the air you breathe ? One fracking company pours unregulated toxic waste into the ground ? ... 2 do it ? 3 ? You're entire county is taken over and your neighbors tap water ignites ? Your tap water ignites ?
3.) The river where you fish and eat fish from ... One company upstream is dumping crap in it ... Then 2 do it ? 3 ? They all do it ? At what point to you stop eating the fish ?
Not to pick sides in this discussion but just to point out a few facts, which sadly, seem to be lacking in most of these debates.
1) Forests - I can't say whether forests are "needed" or not. I can say, that at times in the geologic past, not much of the earth, if any, was forested. Depending on the configuration of the continents, ocean currents, etc we have had arid conditions over most of the planet that did not support forests. Life adapted to these conditions as it always has. People, who aren't geoscientists, tend to underestimate the wide range of climate and ecology that has existed in the past and will in the future. BTW - equally true is the statement that there have been more periods of time in earth's past when there were no ice sheets at the poles than when there were ice sheets.
2) Fracking - my pet peeve since I work in the business. Assuming this was a reference to the Gasland movie, pls take time to watch the movie FrackNation. It was funded through an independent effort (Kickstart) and takes a much more objective look at fracking than Gasland did. BTW - nobody's water catches on fire due to fracking and it is not accurate to say that the small amount of chemicals involved are unregulated.
