COMMON BLUE !!!

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by upurbox » Tue Nov 18, 2008 4:30 pm

RUNNER AT 2ND... BATTER HAS A FULL COUNT... THE PITCH IS DELIVERED AS THE RUNNER FROM 2ND STEALS 3RD.... BALL 4 IS CALLED... AS THE BATTER TOSSES THE BAT TO THE HOME SIDE DUGOUT AND TO GO TO FIRST , THE CATCHER BELLYS UP AGAINST THE BATTER (STILL IN THE BOX) TO MAKE A PLAY AT 3RD AND DOES NOT MAKE A THROW AND THE BLUE CALLS THE RUNNER OUT, DUE TO THE BATTER INTERF. WITH THE CATCHER.
SO I GUESS THE QUESTION IS :WHAT SHOULD A RIGHT HANDED BATTER DO AFTER SHE WALKS AND THERE IS A PLAY BEING MADE AT THIRD??

She should get out of the way. Her goofing around tossing a bat, in the way of the catcher, while the catcher is making a play makes me think this was INT and a good call.

I think it depends on if the batter stayed in the box on ball 4, sometimes the batters don't know the count, so on ball 4 they stay in the box, when they should run out of the box on ball 4, they should know the count, not saying see didn't know the count. never the less i think it is a judgement call by the blue, just my opinion.

If she would have ran out of the box on ball 4 the catcher never would of touched her.

Whether she knows the count or not is irrelevent. I just noticed the OP has the runner out, so I would like to correct myself, the BR is out on the INT. Runner returns.

Ok, maybe it's just me....I honestly thought that she (the catcher) had to attempt to make a play in order for INT to be called. Just bumping into a girl in the box doesn't constitute that, does it? I discussed this very issue with an umpire at a tournament last weekend and he indicated that if there was no throw, there was no play....and thus, no INT. Is it a judgement call with regards to the actual play being made?

Thanks for the clarification....

Speaking ASA

The batter should just stay still until she is confident movement would not interfere with any possibility of a play by the catcher. While you would think moving out of the way of the catcher is preferred, you don't know whether the catcher is going to step up or back to make a throw.

However, since it is obvious the umpire doesn't know the rule (BR should have been declared out and runner sent back), it is quite possible s/he would have ruled INT regardless.

For the record, the umpire must judge that the catcher actually had a play on the runner, not just going through the motions as we often see JO players do, for an INT call.

I am just curious why the umpire in the OP was a "common blue." What makes a "common blue?" How does that compare to an "uncommon blue?"

Uncommon blue, one that actually knows the rules.

I briefly wondered the same thing and determined it was more like " Aw, Come on Blue"! .. not the genus and species of Blueus Commonus ...

There does not have to be a throw to be INT. For example, INT can cause the throw not to be made. That is still INT. All it requires is that the defensive play was attempting to execute a play (and that there was a play to be made of course).
