Actually, hybrids and electric cars. Manufacturers will be forced to push a lot of electric cars to meet 54.5 mpg overall. Do they have anything in motion to support all those electric cars - i.e. electricity generation, transmission and charging stations? You know they want to use solar and wind for that, but I haven't heard of any plans for a huge increase in production.
I had forgotten about the 2016 standard of 35.5 mpg. Most of the decreased oil consumption they tout in 2025 will be a result of that because the newest cars will only be a very small portion of the ones in use at that time.
No wonder they want to replace the gas taxes with a mileage tax.
