Biden suggested today that the POTUS could resort to Executive Order to ban assault weapons.

Someone needs to explain to these folks that Executive Order does not allow the POTUS to enact law. These guys are really struggling with the concept that our Constitution was enacted to prohibit absolute power.

After these were banned, the world became a safer place.

Two girls that my DD played with this past summer in Premier 16U attend Taft HS where the shooting occurred today. One of the girl's dad was a coach for the 16U team and is a football coach and teacher at the HS.

I have emails out to try and find out if they are all okay.

Terrific kids and a terrific father. Please keep them in your prayers.

I thought we passed laws for "gun free" zones at schools. OMG, someone broke the law? So when we get laws to ban all guns, the problem will go away, right? Wrong.

Everybody is getting so hysterical. This was an unfortunate event, it seems that it was targeted at one person and one stray pellet hit a teacher. There is a thousand ways to kill a person, the use of firearms is just one of them.

In fairness to both sides of the argument it's worth noting that 2/3 of all murders in the U.S. are committed using guns.

The question is would eliminating gun availability (or making them extremely difficult to obtain) make for less murders or would it just mean that murderers would find a different way to kill?

Let the debate begin...

There is no debate - the first part of your statement "eliminating gun availability (or making them extremely difficult to obtain)" is not valid because that part only applies to law abiding people, not the entire population.

My son was nearly killed 40 days ago by a piece of shit that hit him with his fist - he had something hidden in his fist which Barney hasnt yet been able to figure out what that was - I think it was a roll of quarters. My son's skull was fractured at his left temple by the blow. Therefore I propose that fists and quarters be removed from availability. That last sentence is not as stupid as what is being said by the IIC (idiots in charge) regarding gun control. Enforce the fucking laws we have now.

Donnie - If you recall I know your story with your son very well and I wish him continued success in his recovery. With all due respect, I'm not arguing either side, just looking for open debate.

That said, it is disconcerting that anyone that offers even a hint of an opposing view here to the more vocal majority regarding political opinions is vehemently attacked.

Certainly you can't all think that you are right every time out. If so, that invalidates your opinions to me.

I will continue to stay grounded in the middle and look for rational solutions to problems. There is indeed a problem here and I am looking on with great interest to see what our current leaders propose as a solution. I don't think it's inappropriate for them to want to try and find a way to at least curb this all-too-often recurring violence.

How about we wait and see what is being proposed before we get "up in arms".

My two cents.

FP, my apologies - being rational is not something i do too well at anymore. However, lets suppose you and I are sitting in a coffee shop talking about this issue. Can you explain to me how passing any kind of law regarding gun control - is going to cause the criminals, by definition - non followers of laws - to turn in, or quit using , or do anything but laugh at the people who do follow these laws. This isnt England or some country where the queen blows a whistle or whatever she does and everyone obeys. This is the country that all of the people who dont put up with other people's crap, immigrated to over the last 521 years. And another big issue is this - I have lived in and spent a lot of time in big cities, NYC, Phoenix, Chicago, Cleveland, etc and spent the much happier part of my life away from those places - the people who live in those places are very different - not bad - not stupid - but different. The people who live around George West Texas are as different as night and day from the people who lives in Cleveland Ohio.

That is not true.

From LexisNexis search: "Most executive orders are issued pursuant to specific statutory delegations of authority from Congress. Like federal statutes, such executive orders have the force and effect of law and preempt inconsistent state law. Federal agencies frequently promulgate regulations to implement the substantive requirements of presidential orders. Thus agency action taken pursuant to a valid executive order may have a significant adverse effect on private interests."

Basically, what it boils down to is that if Congress does not pass legislation to replace the Executive Order or a Federal court does not invalidate the Executive Order, the Executive Order does (for all intents and purposes) become "law".
