1st DD who is now playing college ball is playing for the love of it. She had her injuries and I thought she may be done before going to college but she worked hard going through physical therapy because she wanted to play. She enjoys playing ball with other women now and meeting others. She did play other sports when little and even dance classes by mothers request ( hard for me sitting at those practices.) It wasn't until 12u when she made her first travel team that she desided to play only that sport. To fill the void duing breaks she took horse back lessons for a few years until the organization became more serious and went year round. DD #2 went right into travel ball at 10u following her sister. DD #2 played with a handful of girls for years and was very close with them that they were like her sisters. She still plays with a few now. Her thinking right know is that she wants to play a game every week, but I have to tell her relax. For my girls it has kept them out of trouble that I know of. I know they have given up a lot to play every weekend during the summer but it is there choice. One thing I would say, DD #1 didn't play travel ball the summer before going off to college by her choice after speaking to T.B. Coaches and college coaches. Everyone told her its 8 weeks to have fun before college. As she would say it was a great summer with friends.

Why softball? Because she sucked at sports that require coordination.

Actually, my girls played soccer, basketball, did dance and gymnastics for a while, but as TB demanded more and more time to be competitive, they chose to give up the other things rather than play on a softball team that was less competitive. It was completely their choice and one I wasn't initially very happy with. I was a college basketball player and liked the sports with air conditioning and a roof!!! The outdoor, rain, heat, freezing rain/sleet, 105` heat and tornado winds with sand being driven through your clothes onto your skin was not my idea of a great time. I learned to cope and now love watching them play, but there are still days I wish they had chosen an indoor sport.

As for now, they play basketball, volleyball and softball in school as well as travel softball and volleyball. One of the two runs track as well. Thankfully we are in a small school that works with our crazy schedule and our tb teams are great about working around each other as much as possible, but when push comes to shove and they have to make a choice they will still pick softball over all the other sports hands down.

We had the same situation except for the part about "I was a college basketball player..." because I was a 4-eyed, short, nerd. I loved all the sports but was good at none - I started at football only because I was very very good at raising large amounts of iron up in the air and became the strongest guy in our school. I grew 6 inches after graduating from high school - too late. Enough of that - mine did swimming early on, then one did kick ball for a year, and the other did t-ball, along with flag football, basketball, volleyball. Slowly the other sports dropped off - except track, both girls ran track through their senior years - I really wish that the college softball coaches would let the girls who did track, to continue to run in college. I really think swimming is an excellent sport for girls playing any sport - but for some reason, high school swim coaches love to have practice at the butt crack of dawn -and both my girls stopped swimming then. If my DD2 had been taller (she is 5.7) she would have gone for vball in college I think , she loves vball and softball - but likes the vball uniform more (dont ask). But both girls love being out in the sun, softball is in the sun and if they could have majored in "Beach" they would have.

...ask myself that all the time...everyday...
DD?...She loves it is why...a few years ago she told me she wanted to play College softball and would do whatever it took...
I said I'd help...what the hell was I thinking?
ME?...cause I apparently enjoy being broke, yard looking like Busch Gardens Jungle exhibit...9 year old truck with 180K on it...forgot what a 'vacation' is....
But I only get one childhood with each kid...so its worth it

Thing 1 started off playing rec soccer with the neighbor's kid. That led to rec softball. Kid decided there was less running in softball and to my eternal delight, stopped playing soccer. Mom's dream of a ballerina also went down in flames. She started pitching and was hooked. She learned to surf and also did competitive swim and was pretty good, but said swimming was boring and she didnt want to have "man" shoulders. She played vball and loved it (setter). Travel softball was accidental, but once she got into the higher level of competition she loved it and phased out vball.

Thing 2 didnt like soccer and played softball because her older sister did. She is also into gymnastics. Jury is still out on whether Thing 2 will make the jump to travel. She will do at least one summer of competitive swim.

Both are also huge fans of SUP (stand up paddle boarding).

We have always introduced our kids to as many sports as possible. They have made the decisions on what to stay involved with. I encourage them and write checks.

DD has always played just about every available sport (track/soccer/volleyball/softball) even did cheer leading & dance (notice they were not included in the sport section). Her favorites have always been volleyball and softball. While she has been good at all of them softball has always been #1. I could venture some guesses but truly I don't know why she choose it #1. I never played baseball so it wasn't from me pushing the ball & stick sport that's for sure. There was rec BB and softball in our area. She took a few years off of basketball and never really got back into it. Volleyball has remained the only sport she plays every year. She had offers to play club ball, but with it interfering with TB she decided she would rather just play school VB.....thank goodness. I can't imagine trying to pay for both!

Because DD got tired of driving 100 miles for a club soccer league game and coming away with a 1-1 tie.
