All Positions are Earned-Really?!

What's on your mind?

by OCtravelmom01 » Sun Aug 26, 2012 6:25 pm

There should be an asterisk next to this statement. Here are some proposed observations that this statement fails eveytime:

-Number of positions currently Available: All too often, we all fall for the okie doke and pump our DD's up because we saw a posting that said that all positions (C, P, SS, RF, CF, LF, 1B, 2B, 3B) were open and drive throughout L.A. and surrounding areas with our game face on to get on a team :D . While there, you find a "Core Parent" who makes small talk with you and spills the beans that they are only looking for 1 position, that 1/2 the team is coming back, and your kid happens to be the 1 of the other 8 they aren't looking for :? . Not only does this waste the parents time, and our gas, it defeats the kid's confidence, because maybe they were "on" today, but since no one was looking for an SS or a slapper, you have missed the other possible opportunities to try out for other teams  . I motion that instead of open tryout, these teams should be screened to ensure that they actually only post for private workouts :D .

-Bait and Switch Tactics: For the teams that are smaller, lesser known teams that, through their performance last season, catch the eye of the bigger organizations, good for you for moving into an organization that will assure your DD will get the exposure and opportunities she has worked for ;) . This rant is about the big organizations, that continue to post tryouts, knowing they've already chosen the #2 & 3 team(s) they beat for automatic, no try out needed membership, but they want to make it look "fair", and not like the Post-TCS/PGF/USSSA/ASA, etc championship aftermath drug deal that it is :x . I can't speak for everyone, but I actually appreciate the teams that say the So Cal JT's 12U is now the OC Strikers 14U on the bucket. That tells me not to waste my time, unless I see they are accepting private workouts. If your kid has game, she will be able to go through a 3 hour tryout just like everyone else that deserves a shot for the alleged open spots. And to the parents who know their kid already has a guaranteed spot, try not to make small talk with the parents who are biting their nails waiting for a yes or no from the coaches. It just makes the organization look even more suspect by letting the skeletons out of the closet  .

-Core Parents: This should be self-explanatory, but a Core Parent is a parent that has been with the same coach since 8U Rec Ball; Or they went to school with or are neighbors to the head coach, or are assistance coaches and managers on the team. They know little Susie or Maggie (the Core Players) peaked in 10U, but they whisper in the coach's ear to pass up the ace pitcher or the lefty slapper because the outside player is out-performing the Core Players. It is near impossible to become one of these parents or players after 10-12U, because even though your kid can out-perform the entire team, they won't welcome you, because you aren't part of the mafia  . One of the most recognizable traits of these teams is that they are always looking for pick up players for tourneys (because they have fund raised all year and have no where to go as they qualify for the World Series with weeks to spare until the event), but they aren't going to allow you to commit to the team fully, because then you would have extend the #1 spots to the new player that hasn't "paid their dues", and the original core parent will disrupt the entire team by going home and leaving you short a player 5 minutes before the coin toss. The Core parent will usually have all of the team spirit wear, and/or hold an office within the team or organization. Even if their kid is sick, out of town or has a school project due, they can miss practice, but your kid better not. And when there is a need for a flex player, you can best believe your kid, not theirs will end up on permanent flex with a BS explanation from the coach why. The solution? Saturate the already crowded pool of teams with your own brand of Daddy/BFF ball, and ensure your kid gets the clock she deserves. I know, vicious cycle.

All in all, if your kid played travel ball last year, then they've earned the right to play at this level and deserve an opportunity to display their talent. Take away some of these barriers associated with today's try outs and evaluate the kids solely on the talent, skill and experience (and future championships-hey, just keeping it real....no one spends thousands of dollars each year to lose) they can bring to the team, and not the sense of entitlement and false loyalty to the coach in exchange for playing time that comes with being today's Core parent/Player. Lets put some integrity back into the sport.

Honestly from a coaching side of things it's parents such as yourself who keeps core kids together.

I am a big believer that teams should post for open workouts only if they are not looking for a ton of new blood. At the same time every team needs to have their studs and Role players. When you have to spend 7 to 8 months with the same group of people the parents better be worth it. I would rather take a good player with great parents then a great player with a parent who I am going to get weekly emails from on how great their DD is and why are they not getting more playing time.

If your DD is a good player and you were not a pain in the ass you would be a core parent... Time to look in the mirror.

I guess...how about some fabric softener also, to get your undergarments out of that wad they are in...

Bottom line, teams can do what they want and don't really owe you a damn thing.
You can buy in to what they are selling or move on...
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

A little rough there Linedrive,,,, If you look at her call sign she is new to TB, or has done 1 season and been burned with ear candy. Let's face it,,at 12u there is a lot of daddy ball, at the same time the parents haven't matured either.
As for core team parents,,, they are vital.
So first and for most your daughters past is part of her resume. Choose teams wisely. Name brand vs playing time.
When shopping for a team. Listen! and ask. Try to find team with coaches that do not have kids on team or have coached for more than 5 years in travel ball. Find the coach that is right for your kid. She may not play well for the mean yelling one,,or she may? Shop shop shop, I understand the pressure of getting your kid on a good quality team,
Good Luck,,,and welcome to Heybucket :D
PS The golden rule of TB is,,,,,,,,if you can hit,, we'll find a spot for you. and diving is worth 20points so make it real.
Sins of TB,,,do not watch strike 3!!! if you're going watch, watch from the bench, Fly balls must not drop.
I see further, because I stand on the shoulders of giants

Unfortunately its part of the game. Some coaches are honest, others are asswipes. This is a live and learn sport.

"All positions are earned" means different things to different people. If a coach has a kid on the team, dont go there if they play the same position as your DD because their kid has earned the position by birthright.

At the younger ages, its about playing time, not team name, so find a team where your kid will see the dirt. Before the tryout, ask the coach what the team's needs are and what positions they are looking to fill. Ask about the depth chart at your kid's position(s). That is about all you can do.

Good luck.

Save alot of time just send your dd's video and profile if they like what they see just call. If it's good enough for a college coach it's good enough for any travel coach. PS yes I did and know I didn't get any calls but I also didn't waste time at tryous that there would be 100 girls for 2 spots. So nothing lost

I think we need a try-out czar - any volunteers?

I think when teams say all positions are open, they mean just that. Why would you listen to some parent telling you that they dont need this or done need that?

I returned a ss, 2nd base, 1st base, catcher, 3rd base, pitcher, 2 outfielders to my 18g team. I added a 2nd baseman, 3rd/ss, pitching and outfielders.

So I now have multiple 2nd , 3rd, and OF. Who will be the starters at those positions is up to the kids at this point. So even though I had players returning to my team at certain positions, that does not mean they are getting all the innings at those spots.

As far as integrity.. that works both ways. I had 3 parents tell me that their kids were returning, only to have those 3 players leave less than 5 days later.

The lack of integrity is at the root of most of our problems today. Teaching your kid that its ok to lie to a coach to buy time while you shop teams is just as bad as a coach lying. One never justifies the other.
