Just to dumb it down for me a bit, could you please explain how the public school kids in your area have more say about where they go to school than the private school kids do?

Hey genius, you didn't answer the question. How are the public school parents any less guilty (as if it's actually a problem ) of deciding where their kids are going to go to school? Answer: they aren't. Public school kids are defaulted in to a school based on where they live--where their PARENTS choose to live.

Anyway, thanks for all of your brilliant input. But, to the extent that it's even a measurable criterion in school choice, I think I'd rather my kids go to school with other kids whose parents make the important family decisions. I'm sure that handing the reins over to your teenager will work out great for you though.

My kids go to public school and they CHOOSE which one they wanted to attend. Inter-district transfer.
