Curious how many knew about this when it happened, two days after Independence Day:

Executive Order -- Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions

The Federal Government must have the ability to communicate at all times and under all circumstances to carry out its most critical and time sensitive missions. Survivable, resilient, enduring, and effective communications, both domestic and international, are essential to enable the executive branch to communicate within itself and with: the legislative and judicial branches; State, local, territorial, and tribal governments; private sector entities; and the public, allies, and other nations. Such communications must be possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies, and improve national resilience. The views of all levels of government, the private and nonprofit sectors, and the public must inform the development of national security and emergency preparedness (NS/EP) communications policies, programs, and capabilities.

This allows, in a "national emergency", for the Feds to take control of the Internet, radio and TV in the US.

If you plan to vote for this guy, please read this.

This actually has been on the books since the Eisenhower admin)- they just added the Internet - just as they added TV during to include the internet. I am no big fan of Obama and wish him a sweet retirement like the rest of us, but this should be seen as what it is. The idea, originally, was part of the emergency procedures during a nuclear attack or some other emergency. ie Emergency Broadcast System

Big difference with the Internet, as the web is global.

It actually is still makes sense in a "National Emergency"-- Just as the government has the right to take over airlines and shipping in time of war- since the internet is the way most americans communicate

Just as long as the checks and balances are there and the bar is high in defining an emergency that would require such an action

I am going 'purely' by memory here, which keep in mind is very cloudy ... BUT, I think this started just after 9-11 ...
