2011/12 is getting started soon....who are THE 12/11u teams?

by madwhit » Mon Jul 09, 2012 5:33 pm

Oh my Nut that is a BIG understatement... But if you are going to take a beating it is best done by a great team like lazers.

when they were here last we sent them home packing I fiigured it was pay back. Which on a positive note Illinois is neutral ground.

Ok, the season is winding down and this thread has been crazy. Gators Cynthia, I know you have taken a lot of heat for ranking your team #1, but if anyone goes back and reads the context, they can see that you were baited into that response. I have seen your team play and they are definitely an elite team. I have seen Edge 99 and agree that they belong up there. I have not seen Xtreme 99, but their record clearly suggests they belong up there too.

In addition Raiders 99 and Center Grove Xpress are definitely worthy of a top 5 ranking. Definitely outstanding teams top to bottom-hitting, defense and pitching. There was a team called Center Grove Cyclones that had been dominant in this age group for the last couple years. Is the Xpress the same team under a different name?

I am not going to rank them in any particular order because they are evenly matched enough that on any given weekend, any one of them can come out on top in a given tournament. The body of work is pretty close to complete and I think these 5 have set themselves apart from the others in 12U Indiana softball- Gators 99, Edge 99, Xtreme 99, Raiders 99, and CG Xpress.

The team I am going to take flack for leaving out is Crown Point Bulldogs 99 and I have had a very difficult time rating this team. In my observation, they are a team that can put a great game together but have a difficult time sustaining it from one game to the next. They have some great players. Their shortstop is MONSTER and can play for any team anywhere in America. They are a very formidable opponent, but I would put their pitching in the A-minus/B-plus rating, good but not quite strong enough to carry them to the finish line in a strong tournament. I would classify this team as a tweener-they would be the odds on favorite to win the NSA B World Series, but are a middle of the pack team in a Class A event.

It will be interesting to see how these teams develop as they move up to the 14U division.

''TEAM ENERGY''. This might be a stupid, unwarranted ,inquisitive question.

What happen; thats if the rumor mill is correct, did they stop playing at the last minute, has the team folded, are they re- thinking a better game plan, are they falling back to re-group, what is the truth behind this rumor?, They did play all year didn't they, somebody from team energy please speak up and tell us heybucket junkies the facts.

Insoftballnut

I'm pretty sure DailyJoy summed it up in his/ her last post. They split because their starting pitcher/ family decided they didn't want to go to nationals, well you can't go without a pitcher right? I am assuming that is why DailyJoy implied a team shouldn't be all about one girl... Just what I've heard though and you know the rumor mill gets stretched a bit.

insoftballnut.........Team Energy played the entire season up until last Tuesday when the season, for us, officially ended.

Likeitornot......Yes the rumor mill is getting stretched. I never mentioned a split nor did I say it was the starting pitcher/family who decided not to go to nationals. It was not our pitcher.

The team did not split the season ended. The team goal was to play in a national or world series. With the exception of Nationals and NSA State this past weekend we played in each tourney we had intended to play. Since nationals were no longer an option the coaches ended the season.

My statement implying a team should not be about one girl wasn't referencing any one girl on our team but a mind set, seen on most teams, where coaches tend to cater to parents or even worse ignore issues with parents.

In a way I think its the nature of the beast. Parents invest money, time and resources into a team. A coach like the CEO or CFO of a business may be in charge but rarely has the controlling interest. The better the player the more stock the parent owns. The coach has to make sure his shareholders are happy and content while at the same time building a successful program. I think the programs who are most successful are selling preferred stock over common stock........So how do I found a program offering preferred stock? LOL

One of my good friends told me the most important role of a coach is not teaching skills or strategy. The most important role is protecting the chemistry of the team. I think he was correct.

We had excellent coaches this year who taught my dd so much. She has improved and is a much better ball player today then she was when she tried out. I am thankful for all their time invested and for giving dd such a wonderful opportunity.

My advice to them and any coach would be to carefully guard the chemistry, and harmony, of the team by making sure players, parents and fans are aware the unity of the team is more important then winning any single game.

Followed this thread from afar - no interest in any 12U team whatsoever...

With that said, Dailyjoy is absolutely correct about a coaches #1 job - keeping the chemistry of the team at the forefront, at all times!!

Good luck to all the remainder of the travel ball season.

ok so now team chemistry trumps teaching the mechanics/fundamentals of the game????? ok let me tell my parents that the #1 goal for me is to make sure all their DD's are best friends and want to all have a sleep over when practice or tournaments are done........fast forward to the future- little suzie meets her high school coach at her first tryout and when he can't figure out why she can hardly do anything right he asks' her "what did you learn from your travel team?" well.......my coach taught us to all be best friends and sing cheers together!!!     this isn't a social club! that is what rec ball is for! further proving what the problem is with all the watered down teams all across indiana............

Elwood

Chemistry does not equate best friends.

Chemistry is defined by Webster as........

"the interaction of one personality with another"
"sympathetic understanding; rapport: "
"any or all of the elements that make up something"

No matter how mechanically sounds a team is, especially at 12u, if the girls can not interact with each other their play on the field will suffer. Softball is not a singular sport and in order to win the team must work well as one unit.

Players are not robots they are 12u girls with lots of emotions. They don't have to sing songs together or be best friends but they do have to have a rapport and a coach has to be aware of and remove any element which prevents the team from bonding.

Oxygen in it's purest form is combustible but when bonded with hydrogen it forms life given water. For a team to be successful and survive it has to have water. A coaches job is to make sure no free radicals come in and prevent the elements on his team from bonding. If he is not capable of doing this it is more then likely the team will blow up.

In my limited experience the most disruptive thing to the chemistry of a team is when a parent talks negatively about the coach and other players in front of his or her dd.

Little Suzie's coach is freer to protect the chemistry of his team. First, at least in our local schools, if a parent gets in a fight or comes into the dug out screaming at the coach he/she can, and most likely will, kick the parent off school grounds. A coach in high school, and college, carry more then 11 girls. The coach can easily control the chemistry of a team by benching a girl who rolls her eyes at him.

We saw a perfect example of a coach protecting the chemistry of his team when Coach Walton suspended three of his starters.

You people are nuts. Give me a coach who can teach fundamentals, train, and prepare my daughter to play the game to the best of her ability. I will enter her in girl scouts to sing Kumbaya and get all touchie-feelie.

Yes, there is a need to team build, etc. But don't give me any BS about that being more important then being able to train your players. Teach my daughter how to push bunt, hit a rise ball, turn a double play, or throw a change up for a strike on a 3-2 pitch. THAT'S what I am looking for.
