You continue to demonstrate your ignorance. How in the world would you know who I have schooled?

I was a mid-level Gold coach...but you work for a lot of guys like me.

Umpires do not work for you or your team. Maybe that is your problem. You want to be the boss and that doesn't happen when you run into an umpire who doesn't buy into your BS.

I taught my players the game...players that Haning, Rico, Anderson, Tyson would never coach...but players that are playing at D1 schools this year. You can belittle that if you wish...I really don't care.

And the beat goes on. No one has belittled you or your experience. Until you mentioned it, I didn't know what it was, but I really do not care.

You guys don't see a problem with your approach. I tried to give you some viable feedback.

Feedback? You talk about me, but you don't do much more than look down on anyone who doesn't agree with your way of doing things.

KMA.

Mikey, nobody would be able to pay attention to your long winded diatribes espousing your well of knowledge long enough to be schooled. You prefer to insult.

Guess what, Mikey....we pay for your services. Why else would you guys bastardize the NCAA rule book....by your own admission...because thats the way the coaches want it called...if you don't call it that way, you don't work NCAA. You know who you work for....us.

Actually Wade did belittle me as a coach...read his post instead of spewing forth your ignorant mantra.

I talk about you because you are the worst of the worst. You make me sick because you actually do have a lot of knowledge that you could share, nicely, with concerned coaches on this board. You would rather use your knowledge as a sword to attack a coach who questions a rule. No problem. You are an ass and we all know it. Now we can carry on. I'm done with you and with Wade. Buh-bye.

It seems the system is designed for coaches and umps to despise each other.

Start with the rule book. Coaches read it, umpires read it.

Then umps go to clinics etc and are taught how to enforce it.

Then TD's and UICs add their bent.

By the time any games get played, the rule the coach thinks he knows isn't quite the rule the ump has been taught / instructed to enforce.

The result, not surprisingly, is bedlam.

And who's right?
The guy who reads and applies the letter of the rule?
Or the guy who has been instructed in the various nuances of the rule?

Interesting system, and true across all sports. You frequently read how "the NBA has instructed their refs to enforce so and so rule". Or "the NFL is cracking down on xx block / shift, etc". Or "the IOC is going to step up testing for..." Hell, the NHL even has rules for fighting (which itself is against the rules, but they have rules for how to break their rules anyway!! LOL)

Why should FP be any different?

The IP rule is a fine example. It gets called once in the first inning, then disappears. (Until its called 3 or 4 times in a row in the Olympics, and suddenly you're changing pitchers!)

Bottom line is that the enforcement of rules is frequently arbitrary. This suits some folks just fine, while others get really pissed off about it. As Gomer Pyle would say "Surprise! Surprise!"

All of which makes for fun reading on HeyBucket, and some interesting 'discussions' in the dirt! Just as designed. :D

Your resume is an open book and on your profile.. how could I possibly degrade you by reading it?

You know, youre kinda touchy, thin skinned, and very rude about it too on several threads now..maybe you should stick with coaching..you may not be able to handle the blue.

Thats not degrading you.. it takes an odd duck to be willing and able to put up with the abuse heaped on us in a professional manner. As evidence by the reactions of coaches on this board to even simple comments .. most probably couldn't ever do it.

Who do they work for?

I understand this is done differently around the country, but I am only speaking for what involves the umpires in my area.

Themselves. Umpires are ICs who accept assignments through a local association and their contract with the league.

I guess in a tournament you could claim you worked for the TD, even though the teams pay to enter so in a way they pay you.

No, they pay to get into the tournament.

In a friendly situation the teams pay each umpire for their particular games so you would be working for the coaches that pay you.

Again, an IC accepts an assignment through the local association.

If I'm working in OKC, I'm working for the ASA. If in Plant City, I'm working for the ISF. When I run championship play tournaments, the umpires are assigned by my designee. When I work a HS game or local rec game, I'm accepting an assignment from the association contracted to provide umpires, not the teams. As in every other situation, the umpire is free to accept or decline any assignments they choose.

I don't think you want to be the employer. Because if I get hurt, I will be looking to you for paying the Workmen's Comp. If I you terminate me without cause, I would be able to file for Unemployment Benefits. And then there is that requirement of employers to collect and submit Social Security and other taxes of their employees.

When a team pays the umpire on the field, they are satisfying the contract between them and the association, not the umpire.

Do you not think there is a viable ethical issue if an umpire is paid by the team? I'm sure you are familiar with the term "homer" and I'm not talking about a ball batted of the fence.

You must not have any mirrors in your house and I'm pretty sure the house isn't made of glass. It is so long because I don't want to confuse you with assumptions. I want to be specific as possible to avoid any misunderstandings. As much as I try, apparently it doesn't work well with some.

Guess what, Mikey....we pay for your services.

Guess what? You don't and I challenge you to prove your statement.

Why else would you guys bastardize the NCAA rule book....by your own admission.

No, I don't think so. Here is the NCAA Women's Softball Rules Committee.

http://web1.ncaa.org/committees/committees_roster.jsp?CommitteeName=WSBRULES

How many umpires are on that committee? If you cannot tell, the answer is none, zero, nil, nada, zip.

..because thats the way the coaches want it called...if you don't call it that way, you don't work NCAA. You know who you work for....us.

Aaahhhh......nope. The NCAA does not have softball umpires. Just like many of the local leagues, they contract with umpire associations/boards/whatever. These associations contract with different leagues/conferences. If a conference doesn't mandate the use of a specific association, a coach can develop his/her own contacts with an association which happens more in fall ball than spring conference play. The umpires get paid in whatever manner is specified in the agreement between the conference and the umpire's association.

You are correct that the coaches can place a lot of pressure on the assignors to "red line" particular umpires. That doesn't happen as much as it did a decade ago when many of the umpires were from a local association. The good part for the umpires today is most assignors handle multiple conferences, so that doesn't always mean the umpire is done, just assigned elsewhere.

Yep, Sam doesn't talk poorly or down to anyone.

Where is the positive? Every time any umpire tries to help a coach on here or any other board and you don't care for the answer or manner in which it is delivered, you pull out your grumpy old man act and beat them to death with it. I know for a fact that you have chased umpires away from eteamz and here. I don't mind 'cause I like easy targets. Meanwhile, I will take the intelligent part of the conversation off-line where something can be accomplished.
