GSSA 18 & Under Gold Meeting Info
Sacramento ASA is a part of Region 14 which encompasses Nevada, Hawaii and California. Region 14 has meetings through out the year in which each association sends representation and the procedures of how we run our JO program are discussed. A meeting was held in Irvine this weekend and I would like to share with you a change in Region 14 rules that will affect the 18u division (both Gold and “A”) for the 2009 season.
For 2009 there will be a classification procedure put in place to limit the number of Gold teams in Region 14. Each association will submit their procedure for classifying their teams by the November Council Meeting.
This change in policy by Region 14 comes due to the over population of the Gold division. The Gold Program was designed to give the Elite teams a place to play each other. With every team wishing to be Gold, we have seen a watered down program and we have seen it has also hurt our 18u “A” program with a reduced number of participants. With the Gold qualifying tournaments trying to host an excess of 90+ teams in a two or three day tournament, we had to come up with a solution to help our Gold program return to the program it was designed to be.
We would like to hold a meeting to discuss this new classification procedure and answer any questions you may have. We welcome your input so please bring your idea’s.
The meeting is scheduled for Monday September 15th

I think this just makes 16u and 18u even more attractive to college coaches for recruiting. Why? This now makes Gold competitive, and I believe that you will see even more first year college players taking up roster spots.

if your association is dominated by a particular org who has a gold team, what are the odds they'll be taken care of and competing orgs get skrood. of course, some of the "gold" teams probably should get skrood.

Agree… Gold will be more competitive, which I believe is the goal. When our DD played about 7-8 years back, the percentage of college players making the Gold rosters were much higher than today… and 18’s was more attractive for recruiting. Those ASA years were better than what you have today.
There is something very wrong with 8th & 9th graders playing GOLD (IMO). They grow up fast enough!! Besides, ASA Nationals are often some of their fondest softball memories for many when they look back.
Politics and egos aside, hopefully, the great teams don’t get torched in the process.. Good Luck!

I think that meeting is for the Sacramento Assoc to decide how they will "certify" who is Gold out of their Assoc.
Several questions arise though.
Doesn't this shift the talent focus from the individuals on the team to the team itself? You're now certifying teams rather than individuals, removing the showcase focus (not a bad thing, IMO).
What constitutes a Gold team? Qualifying for the previous years Gold Nationals? Seems to prevent new teams or teams moving to Gold as a unit.
Maybe wins? Wins where? Do you have an Assoc. qualifier and the top 3 teams "win" Gold status? When does that get played with only a week between the end of HS ball and the first Nat Qualifier?
What happens if the Assoc. JO commish plays favorites? Is ther an appeal process? To who?
Given the drastic roster changes from year to year, will this be a yearly certification?
At what point do you have to submit a roster for certification? January? June? Before or after HS ball?
Are rosters frozen after certification, much as they are in championship play now? (will hurt everyone if certification occurs early)
Will all Associations in the region certify on the same date? Sac certifies in April, NorCal in Feb, Socal in June, etc. Clearly a lot of in season Assoc. hoping will occur. A new rule limiting players only to teams certified in the Assoc in which they live? Or went to HS? Or played last year?
Clearly a lot of parents and kids who think they are Gold will not be able to play Gold with fewer teams. Where do they play? They've waited until all the Assoc within the region have finalized certifications before looking for an 18u team?
What about the "good ole boy" teams who have been Gold forever and are "part of the club" regardless of current talent? Will they be grandfathered year after year anyway? A coach may be great at getting kids recruited, but the team hasn't been to Nationals in ten years.
What happens with college players? If they aren't on the roster at certification, they team may not get certified. On the other hand, a team loads up on college players just to get certified. Will those teams be required to play those kids a minimum number of innings over the course of a summer to maintain the certification? How do you document that, TD's?

What if your JO Commish sponsors 2 18 Gold teams? Won't teams that are bumped be upset if one or both of these teams is awarded "Gold" status?
