Icing after the game - on the road...

Sorry for breathing life into an old thread, but searched on icing to see some HB community commentary.

His take on ice is not to apply it unless there is an injury.

Ok, but was he saying it could cause some other issue if icing and its not needed?

Arto - Was your kid using the double bag (front and back) or single bag? Amazon has both, but it looks like your link is no longer functional.

She has the single bag with the sleeve that holds it in place.
I googled it, and it looks like they have made some slight changes, but basically the same product.
My kid's is going on 3 years old and still works fine.

We have two of the blue shoulder ice wrap - bought them out the SkyMarket catalog on Continental Airline. But on the road, I have a box of 2.5 gallon ice freezer ziploc bags in the pocket of the back seat, we stop at a convenience store, fill it - close it properly, check my watch and she puts it on. 22 minutes later, she takes it off. I dont think its ever spilt. There was a time when she complained - I beat her - she stopped complaining. No problem. And we have certainly seen issues when she is in a multi-day tourney, and would forget to ice. So we do, and always will, well provided she and her college coach take care of it. Aint my problem in about 120 days.

I went out and purchased the Total Ice Therapy (2bl bag model), based largely on the comments that were posted here on the bucket and must say that I am extremely impressed with its results and simplicity. DD had a chance to use it the last couple of days after pitching and although the whiney lil' princess will continue to whine, it is not because her shoulder is aching. Good value at $35 bucks too.

The plastic bag with plastic stretch wrap works well if you don't have an ice wrap. For a weekend, I use a hard sided cooler and 10# of dry ice to freeze two ice wraps. Wrap the dry ice in brown butcher paper. Be careful handling the dry ice. It works great, sometimes too well.

Wanted to give a big thank you to the guy running the ice pack/wrap stand at Diamond Valley this past weekend.
At the end of the day on Saturday, my kid got some ice from the snack bar for her total ice therapy shoulder pack.
As we were walking to the parking lot, she said she thought it was leaking because she felt some water dripping.
The guy running the ice therapy stand happened to be walking next to us, packing up for the day.
He immediately came over, felt the bag and agreed it had a leak.

I told him the bag was over 3 years old. He said "no problem, I will give you a new one."
I offered to pay him, again telling him it was over 3 years old, and my kid has used it constantly over that time.
He would not accept any money, and gave her a new ice pack on the spot.

Now that was some great customer service...and us being in the right place at the right time!

We use Kingbrand.com knee wraps that have a rigid gel for "icing" knees. Because the gel is not frozen, but just refrigerated, there is less chance of skin damage and my kid is willing to keep it on for 30 whole minutes. I just put them in their own small cooler in my trunk, and they are great to use on the ride home. I think they have similar products for the shoulder, elbow, etc.
