strike two or foul out???

I felt it would be an out. Just based on the fact that a batted ball that bounces off of a players body, but doesnt touch the ground and is caught is an out.

Same as a ball that bounces off of a players body and over an outfield fence is a homerun.

If you have 2 strikes and you FOUL TIP the pitch, you are out, ball is live.

If you have 2 strikes and you FOUL the pitch, you get another chance.

Im not new to the game so you dont have to explain the live ball on a foul tip or getting another chance on a foul ball.
But you are only out if the FOUL TIP is caught and you only get another chance if the FOUL ball is not caught.

I would still hold my position, but change that it is a foul ball, not an un-caught (or "illegally" caught) foul tip. How can something go directly to the glove and deflect off of it at the same time? It seems the discretion is given to the umpire to determine if it goes directly to the catcher's glove or not. An better example of where it might be a FT, strike 3 is a ball directly to the catcher's glove that is dropped or pops out, but bounces off a shin guard and is recovered before hitting the ground.

Still 3-2, IMO, on a ball that hits off the glove and then the helmet.

Let's forget the fact that the the ball was tipped. I don't think that is relevent in this situation with 2 strikes. The batter swung at the pitch, hit the ball, and the catcher caught the ball. To me that is an out with two strikes regardless of the trajectory of the ball after contact with the bat. Now if there were less than two strikes, that's a different story. I'm not sure what the call would be in that scenario. With 2 strikes, though, batter is out. No question.

Ok now i see what the problem is. My words were incorrect. Wherever i used FOUL TIP please substitute a ball that was struck by the bat, but was not imediately caught or controlled. Therefore ricocheting off of the catchers glove and/or mask or any other part of the catchers body. Then being CAUGHT before landing on the ground.

Also the ball never struck the umpire or any other part of the field.

You've almost got it. If a ball is hit AND goes directly and sharply to the catchers glove or hand, AND is eventually caught, it is a foul tip, strike.

If the ball does NOT go directly and sharply to the catchers glove or hand, hits anything else or hits the ground, it is a foul ball.

I hope she can figure it out better than you! If you have 2 strikes and you foul tip the ball you now have 3 strikes and an out.

The original scenario given is a foul tip for strike 3.

I think he was referring to the foul tip not being caught. His words seem to lean towards a ball tipped off of the bat but not caught therefore a FOULTIP.

Because to me if you foul tip a ball with 2 strikes the batter is not our unless the ball is CAUGHT.
