Title IX

What's on your mind?

In our are the county identified parents as a 'funding source' about 10 years ago, and they have been raping them every time they turn around. Field usage fees, lighting fees, insurance fees have all gone through the rough. Yet we still pay the same in taxes, and those taxes were originally intended for the parks and fields they are now charging.

Even if parents were massively wealthy, it seems the system in place today is more fair. I do not think there is a single school that would argue that Title IX has not been a great thing.

For someone who apparently believes himself to be intelligent and relatively educated, you demonstrate a fair amount of ignorance and cynicism as it pertains to the intelligence and dedication of those in the softball community.

Sounds like you believe in a welfare state or death. What a shame.

When you run out of argument you fall back to bad insults and obtuse approach.

You could not be more wrong, I absolutely despise the welfare state and think all welfare should be capped, both in individual and percentage of state expense.

Back to Softball. Without Title IX, where would our sport be? If Title IX disappears today what does this sport look like tomorrow?

I cannot find one college advocating that position. I think for the most part colleges realize that Title IX, while imperfect, is necessary. Are you saying it is not?

To start, it sure would be nice if people responding to a post would cite such as a matter of common sense and courtesy.

Second, WTF are you talking about? Where in ANY of these posts have anyone suggested terminating Title IX? Try reading the words posted.

BTW, if anything did disappear for some reason, shame on you and all the other parents who claim it is all about the girls.

Our friend from VA's comments was bordering on a great point that many overlook. There have been times when the reason one team may seem to be receiving more from a source is due to the effort, energy and personal commitments made to the program by the parents, coaches and players, not because they received more from said source.

Are you suggesting that the boys' parents put in the synthetic grass football field and new visitors stands at my local HS? The fields that the district is putting in at all the HS FB fields within the district?

Boys sports has lead to the dream that the kid could benefit financially from playing at a high level. Thus, the parents got involved in their boys' sports and contributed time and money. Until recently, that has been far from the case for girls. Title IX lead to college scholarships being offered to more and more female athletes. Girls' parents, seeing this, decided to put their time and effort into their daughters' sports. Title IX caused this revolution.

I have no issue with a college or HS choosing not to field women's teams as long as they don't accept any federal tax dollars. If they accept the money, then my daughters will have the same relative opportunities as the boys in those schools. It's really not about equality or fairness....it's math.

I challenge you to find any statement of mine which says anything to the point you think you are making above. I also challenge you to cite any comment I have made stating Title IX shouldn't have existed or hasn't helped sports (among other things) for females. Just so there is no confusion, I did say is should not have been necessary. Then again, having huge prison systems shouldn't be necessary in an intelligent society, but we know that isn't the case in this country.

Again, I love people who read words that are not there and respond to their presumptions.

Hey MTR I challenge you not to write in riddles & conjecture & actually not stir the pot with ignorance

Until the day my Mother died she believed title IX was the reason my older brother didn't get into the Naval Academy in 1976, she had a valid point as 8o% of those female plebes washed out. However I agree without the "equality" female athletics would be in a sad state where a large percentage of teams would fall into the "club" category like Ultimate Frisbee, where as Always Improve points out "the parents pay". Don't get me wrong there's tremendous athletes in college club sports, but it's just not the same competition wise overall. (duh)

Remember the title IX blade has cut both ways as Archery, diving, swimming, wrestling and several other mens teams have been eliminated as well.

On the litigious side I heard a few years back of a SoCal municipality , El Monte, Monterrey Park I don't remember... where the girls softball was really getting the short end of the stick. They asked for the worst practice field, got turned down by the Board, sued & ended up with not only equal fields but also the best boys Little league field ! My DD started in a Rec league in LA & the hardest thing was getting fields as between the boys hardball & the slow pitch leagues they were constantly shutout. After years of throwing money(including LA 84 funds..leftover from the Olympics), & requests this year I've learned they finally got fields. but then this particular league is filled with attorneys, influential Entertainment people with connections to City Hall & a longstanding Representative who has supported them. It wasn't easy & has cost the parents (you reading this AI?) a bundle for renovation $40,000.

Mike,

You said
"[b]There have been times when the reason one team may seem to be receiving more from a source is due to the effort, energy and personal commitments made to the program by the parents, coaches and players, not because they received more from said source.[/b
]

I think everyone would agree that almost any particular school has better football facilities than softball facilities. I was making the logical assumption that you were referring to football parents working harder than softball parents. If that isn't what you meant to imply, then please educate me further as to the point you were attempting to make.

I am currently aiting for the response from our district in regards to my issues with the softball fields. Pretty sure what that response will be, so we are in the process of taking pictures of all the fields so we can send them off to National Womans Law Center.

By the way, 2 of the schools dont even have fields on campus, they use the city fields adjacent to the school for practice. Oh,... but those fields are closed until March 3, so that leaves them practicing??? im not even sure where. Cant imagine the boys baseball fields not being ready for the start of their season.

I will post up some pics of these fields soon with the accompanying pics of the same school's baseball facilities.

there wont even be a case..... unless MCS just wants to start paying attorney fees.
