Catchers POP Time

What's on your mind?

by Fasterpitch » Wed Aug 13, 2008 7:29 am

I have heard alot of rumors about good and great POP times. Over the years, I have been told that a players needs a 1.7 to get in a major D1. I have timed ( not warmups; in game only) alot of catchers over the years. I have timed one at 1.65 ( Megan Willis), and knowone close to that since. I have timed in game times on the current Texas catcher at 1.82

My oldest DD throws a 1.8 - 1.75 in the game and for the most part she does not get stole on. She only had 3 attempts during Nationals.

I understand that catchers have to have many tools and POP is problably 2nd to blocking/hitting.

What is a good time for the top catchers in the nation in your area.

I think your DD is in pretty good shape. Was her time confirmed at a showcase?

based on college recruiting websites, the top catcher being recruited this past season had a pop time of 1.78...looking at some other exposure camps, most avaerage in the 1.9s and the elite are about 1.8...so you gotta think your dd is on target...

Your POP time appears quite in line. And you are very correct to time it in real game as it is so painfully obvious when "drills" are held (and timed) and catchers cheat by coming out of their set-up early or having the pitcher throw high and to the catchers opposite glove side (preloading the set).
