Good examples of skill videos for college recruitment

What's on your mind?

by Hot Stove League » Wed Nov 02, 2011 10:40 am

With travel dollars down for schools, I guess college coaches will probably want to watch a video of a player before coming out in person. Anyone have good samples of skill videos they may want to share?

Do a search on youtube. There are quite a few out there. Take what you like from each one and make yours the way you want it.

You can send out recruitment video's at almost no cost to yourself to 100's of schools. That sounds great but that also means your investment in each school it is sent to is negligible and coaches are aware of that. If you want to be seriously looked at and evaluated show up on campus for a camp or clinic. Do that along with sending an email describing your interest in the school, a player profile, and video. That is making an actual investment of your time and money in a specific school and shows a coach your interested. Doesn't hurt to fill out an application to the school as well which can be done as early as your junior year in High School.

Not to mention that visiting a school and meeting the coach might help you decide if you actually want to go there. I suggest that kids starting hitting camps at schools they are interested in freshman year in high school and continue attending the ones each year that they don't cross off their list after the intial visit.

Snocatz Dad those are great suggestions and my DD has been doing the letter writing and identifing schools that she is academically interested in. I have also heard of college coaches going on youtube and randomly looking for players, and finding prospects to follow and eventually offering them deals. Probably does not happen every day, though.

jonriv, I agree, a bad video can doom your DD's chances and that's why I want to be careful. You can't fake what is on tape.

Not always- know a girl here locally that showed bad mechanics etc(she really is a good player in real life) got recruited and into any Ivy league school- despite the video

Good coaches see the potential in players. There are good practice players that are not gamers and visaversa. Obviously the player has great grades to get into an Ivy.

so......does anyone want to share a good sample of videos that have worked for them? Did you pay for a video service or did you make it yourself?

Made our own- looking back they were not that great- seemed to be a small part of the process. It is one of those things that you probably "need" to have, but I think most coaches realize it is not always a great representation of the player.

setting video on youtube and /or a site like berecruited.com is great reference for coaches

Here would be my advice:

1) skip having music- makes it look cool, but coaches find it distracting
2) keep it short-
3) show skills- hitting, fielding, running
4) have a coach (tb or hs) review

Attending showcases, school sponsored clinics/camps, interviews, and e-,mails(letters) are far more effective
