The Choice

What's on your mind?

Got it. I guess I am of the opinion that if the decision is so personal, it should be kept personal and not broadcasted over the internet. The constant posts about college rankings, trends of "elite" athletes, and personal "real life" anecdotes make it seem like you are trying to convince somebody of something.

Not at all-just putting forward an alternative view- one shared by many(albeit a minority) HB participants. I will use "real life" because they can add substance to an argument. The "convincing" is to let those in the softball world that there are alternatives other than a Top 20 school.

Pitcher's a & b were 2009 hs graduates and popular discussion points here in CT. Both played in the same HS conference a were friendly rivals...

One plus of a player from this area going to a major softball power school is it gets that school and others like it to at least look at players in this area.

So you are assuming that the softball world doesnt already know that?

Most of us can do the math and understand that the Top 20 over the last few years is made up of less than 50 schools (here is one person's list of top 25), all with less than one full scholarship per player. We also know that if less than a full, the balance has to come from somewhere. That brings into play individual family economics as well as grades and player ability, which resorts the results.

Some kids want to travel while others want to stay close to home. That filters the results further. Now factor in programs available at different schools that match up with the kid's educational and/or vocational goals (and some kids have no clue what they want to do beyond college). Factor in the fact that some of the smaller schools have specific programs that smoke those offered by some of the name D1 schools.

Results are sorted again.

Because each individual factor can and probably does have a profound effect on the data set and the corresponding results, any debate on the subject is pointless.

I assume many do-but a lot of the posts(and showcase conversations) seem to suggest otherwise. OTB your analysis is spot on-

I am not debating the points- just that there are any just coming into the magical world of recruiting who receive a narrow view of things and do not understand the big picture until sometimes it is too late. We all should be able to do the math- I just think far too many refuse to do it.

Then let me tell you what you so desparately want to hear in the hopes that it prevents any more of your inane posts......Your daughter is so much smarter than all those who accepted D-1 scholarships to those pathetic "universities" in the SEC, Big Ten, Big East, etc. Surely she would have been a 4 year all conference player in the Pac-10 had she stooped to that level. All hail JONRIV for raising such an astute daughter who did not succumb to temptation of playing D-1 softball!
There......now will you please stop trying to justify her decision on here?

Whoa there hold the phone. I'll have you know that the SEC has several of the nations top 10 rated schools. Uh......er.....party schools. 8-)

Unfortunately many people will utilize their idea of what was the right choice and impose it on others.

Or just repeat it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Philosophically I'm with you - I have two DDs in HYPSM schools - but, like Battle with his PGF Western Nationals posts, presenting the same point in many different formats just gets old after a while.

Pitcher B- #2 HS pitcher in state-high academic performer

Both are highly recruited-mostly by teams in the northeast

Pitcher A chooses a top 20 team in SEC- appears on TV. Is a good, but not dominate pitcher.

Pitcher B choose a top academic school in the Patriot League- plays well on an OK team

Who made the right choice???

On purely academic and power of diploma/school- obviously Pitcher B. For the "play at the highest level you can" crowd Pitcher A.

It may also come down to what degree programs are offered......

Obviously the choice is very personal and subjective- it depends on the needs and wants of the student-athlete. What is their planned degree? What do they plan to be when they grow-up? This is the kind of choice that all college-bound students/parents have to face all the time-even non-athletes.

Which is the right choice for your DD?

If they are both happy, they both made the right choice. What anybody else thinks is irrelevant.

I know you're not that conceited to suggest that people should only discuss what you want to discuss? That would make for a perfect world, I suppose...Anyway, back to your scolding...carry on...
