The "A"/"B"/"C" classification is very gray.... especially at 10U. Most 10U teams will (SHOULD) register as "B" teams unless they are legitimate "C" rec all star teams. "C" is reserved for all stars, not "B"...
When these 10U teams complete tryouts, they have very little idea if they will be A or B because MOST teams are newly formed in August with a small, if any, core of girls who have been together. If a team registers "A" and a player or team finds out they can't measure up, it is difficult in some classifications to move back down. If you register a team as "A" and a child feels she is in over her head, she is NO LONGER eligible to go play in rec or all stars because she will be in the database as an A player. It is recommended that all 10U teams register as "B" until you are sure you have a roster capable of playing at the "A" level.
Furthermore, there are few, if any, legitimate "A" level 10U teams in Indiana on a national level. Go watch the ASA 10U World Series, or go to Florida/Texas/Georgia/California etc... and you will find there is at most 1 or 2 teams in the state with the combination of pitching/defense/hitting at 10U to compete nationally. The gap lessens as the girls get older, but the southern girls just have much more game experience due to the length of their season.
These teams/coaches are not "bad" people or "trophy hunters" for signing up for "B" as a general rule. They are just protecting their teams and players against a possible bad decision.
