I was holding OBS.

I knew she would have made 2b had there been no obs (or pretty darn close, close enough!). I awarded her 2B.

Defensive coach argued that she did not attempt 2B, she returned to 1B, so she should not have been awarded 2B.

Did I make the right call?

If obstruction is to be treated (or perhaps is?) the same as a delayed dead ball, then I think you made the right call. But, is it like with an illegal pitch you can either accept the result of the at bat if the batter hits the ball, or add a ball to the count? OR when it's catcher obstruction, delayed dead ball and a base awarded is at the choice of the offensive coach - they can choose the result of the play (say the batter hits a home run) instead of the base award... I've never seen an ump award a base on an obstructed runner who returned to the last base touch; it's only after they reach the next base on that same play (regardless of if a play is made on them) that they are safe.. I'll have to look at my kids umpire manual! :|

Not quite. The reactive call to OBS is a delayed dead ball. They are not the same.

Not the same. A DDB is the call. Each award or option is exclusive to the rule in question.

Trust me, it happens.

I would have to see it to call it. my first question was how long ws the ball in the circle, did your runner make it back to third,or in the umpires judgment was there an attempt at third. What I see as an umpire, often is the coach seeing the delayed dead ball signal after the runner obtains a bag and ball is in the circle no attempt being made, runner leaves bag and we got an out. To me I would find it hard to find an out that quickly if there is an obstuction called on the runner rounding third between home and third obstuction happining on the home play side of the plate without the runner making it back to third.

Youre not calling it, you are discussing the rule.

You dont have to see it to discuss the rule.

Not in ASA ball you dont. The rule is clear about how you get an out once the player obtains the bag they would of obtained had there been no OBS.

That is my question he never said if the runner made it back to third after rounding third base and running into the fielder. That is my question if she has never made it back to third base how could she be put out? To me it sound like it happened rather fast. But it is not my judgement that counts it is the blue on the field that matters. So in his or her eyes an out is what we have.

Hit and run Grounder to center, R1 legally advances to 3B

BR is obstructed by F3 rounding 1B, BR holds there off the bag
(in A-BR could have made 2B or B- BR would not have made 2B),

ball is thrown to F6 covering 2B who now fakes a throw to 1B. BR dives back to 1B.

F6 then throws to F5 attempting to retire R1, who dives back into the 3B bag safe. BR now takes off for 2B, F5 throws to F6 and retires the BR at 2B.

Whats the call for A and B?

A. BR is protected to 2B. The ball is dead when F6 tags BR out at 2B. The BR is awarded 2B.

B. BR is protected to 1B. BR is ruled out based on 8.5.B.1.a. The OBS runner safely reached the base to which they were protected when she dives back into 1B. Since the BR attempted to advance on a subsequent play, she is now in jeopardy of being retired which is what occured.

>> is not my judgement that counts it is the blue on the field <<

Exactly. But the runner headed back to 3rd - the base ump said she got to 3rd and then left it - the home plate ump had called the LBR - I didnt see her go to 3rd, I was standing right there, she headed toward 3rd, the contact happened about 6-8 feet down from 3rd heading home - I told her 'stop - the blue is calling obstruction - go home' - she got confused and went back and forth. What happened is the home plate ump blew the call - and when I asked to appeal - the base ump remembered it the way it would match up with the home plate ump. Honest mistake by the base ump, the home plate ump was over his head and lost control. When I heard the base ump go with the LBR call during the conference with the TD, I just wanted to end it and get the girls playing again. Winning that argument wasnt going to happen.
The other team's coach was all over the home plate blue, told him ' if you think you are worth 37 bucks, you are wrong - get your axx to work and show some hustle or leave' as well as some other statements. The other coach was a pretty intimidating person, the home plate blue pretty much looked frazzled.

And that coach was still there to end the game? That's just as bad as the call.

As bad or worse.

Actually, part of the same package. An ump who would tolerate that probably has little pride in himself and would not take the time to learn the rule.
