DP/Flex call

Rule question? Get it answered here.

Our lineup card lists 10 with a DP/Flex but only batting 9. DP and Flex are both playing defense. 2nd time thru lineup, coach has Flex bat for DP. On defense the DP goes back out to left field without notifying ump. After getting 2 outs and the current batter has 2 balls, other team notices DP out in left field without being re-entered. Umpire takes away an out and batter with 2 balls gets first. Is that correct?

No.

A defensive play made by an unreported sub/reentry can be nullified if appealed before a next pitch, and the batter returns with the existing count just prior to that last pitch (same penalty as using an illegal glove, by the way). After batting, the results of an at-bat by an unreported sub/reentry can be nullified and that batter is out, if appealed before the next pitch (similar to batting out of order).

Otherwise, the only result is the player is now reported back in the game.

If you are speaking NFHS, this is not an illegal substitute but rather an unreported sub ... teams and umpires make the correction and offending team gets a warning ... 3-6-7 penalty ... Plays being nullified are for illegal subs ...

This is an illustartion why we should always add the rule set we are using when we define a rule.

There are variations in many - some slight, others major.
