Obstruction question

Just happened, 14 ASA CA States. Base hit to right. As the rf fields the ball, the BR rounds first and is obstructed by the 1st baseman. At the time of obstruction, the ball was being thrown to second, with no chance that the BR would have advanced. After the BR returned to first, the first base coach told the BR to run to second even though the 2b had the ball. She was tagged but the BU sent her back to first because of obstruction (no time out was called). I think she should have been called out or awarded second.

I'm not the rules guru, but I believe the obstruction rule gives you a free attempt at the base. If you make it you make it, if you don't, you return to your previous base.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and look like you're stupid......
than to open it and remove all doubt.

No, that is not correct.

The rule is that the obstructed runner cannot be put out between the two bases where they were obstructed.

There are a few exceptions, but stupid coaching isn't one of them :D

However if I am reading the OP correct. Then the BR should have been call out because she returned to first which ends the Obstruction.
However if I am reading the OP correct. Then the BR should have been call out because she returned to first which ends the Obstruction.
That statement is absolutely false; until all play ends (ball in circle, all runners stopped, lookback rule in effect), all play has not ended. The obstruction rule remains and effect remains in affect until 1) all play ends, or 2) the runner runs beyond BOTH the "between two bases" and the base protected to by award, or 3) the runner reaches the base that would be awarded AND the defense makes a play on ANOTHER runner in the interim, or 4) the runner violates another running by committing interference, missing a base, or passing another runner.

Returning to a base without any of the other conditions is NOT the end of obstruction. No such rule or ruling.

Steve I did not explain myself in detail, but please re-read the OP. The umpire put the runner back to first, therefore I must assume that in the umpires judgment the runner would have only achieved 1st had there been no OBS. Therefore the runner did safely reach the base she would have been award by the umpire had there been no OBS. Therefore by leaving that base she is no long protected by OBS. If I was the D-coach I would have protested and won under 8-5-3-effect. (BTW in number 3 it is not AND it is OR and that is why I am right based on the OP)

Steve is correct. That is only possible unter 8.5.B.1.Exception

The only time the runner places themselves back in jeopardy between the bases obstructed is if they reached the base to which they were due and there is a subsequent play on another runner.

Steve, MTR and Wade. I respect you all and I am using 8-5-B-3 to justify the out. I guess my question for the OP is... Did BR physically make contact with 1st base or did she turn and run to 2nd without touching 1st.

Based on the OP I conclude that the BR rounded and returned (physically contacted the base) Then took off to 2nd and was tagged out. If this is the way it happened then based on the umpires actions by placing the runner on 1st s/he is stating (through that award) that the BR did reach the base she would have if no obstruction occurred. So that is why I have an OUT.

If she did not make contact with 1st then good call by the umpire.
