batter Interference

Rule question? Get it answered here.

I see all the time the right handed batter walking out of the batter's box while a girl is stealing 3rd the catcher doesn't throw the ball or alters her path to make a throw. I asked an ump at the last tourny and he stated that the batter had to do it on purpose otherwise there is no int. Can someone please let me know the rule for sure. I was always taught to stay in the box (1 foot out is ok) with a play at 3rd.

Any action by the batter, whether while inside or outside the batters box, that in the umpires judgement interfered with the catcher making a play can be ruled as such. Whether the action was intentional or not is irrelevant

is this ever called in 12U? I just seem to see it a lot, since my daughter is a catcher. And it never seems to be called. I have been told that there has to be contact but I don't teacher her that. Just looking to figure out how and when this called. Thanks for any help.

Here is how it works: Umpires will not penalize a batter for finishing her swing. Once the swing is over then the catcher must decide which way to go. Once a path is chosen, and the Batter moves into her, swings her bat into her... Interferes with her then INT should be call.

If you are speaking 12U rec then remember that umps give a little in making calls. On this call they should but they don't. If your daughter goes to All-stars and ASA Championship play this should be call. But, 12U get less experienced ump and the most you may hope for is the PU receives additional training after the game.
