Runner Leaving early on Steal

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by phillyj » Mon May 10, 2010 7:29 am

As I understand the NFHS rules on appeals, a BR leaving early can't be appealed to any ump correct ? So I ask the BU can I appeal to you that the runner left early on 1b, he says no you can't appeal that play, that's my call, if I see it I will call it.Then he proceeds to tell my BR in the next inning after she steals second safely with no tag that if the defense had tagged her she would have been out for leaving the base too early. So I'm thinking wow he is allowing an appeal to occur and not calling it like he said , which would be deadball runner out leaving too early correct?
I ask and he says nope it's my decision on how I want to call that.....
I'm lost at this point......

Runner leaving early is an immediate dead ball, runner is out. And no, it is not his decision as to how he wants to call it.

Is this real????????? If that is an accurate story (who knows what he said and what your player heard) then that is absolutely one of the most ridiculous things ever said by any umpire.

Iluvblue, that's what the girl told me as soon as she came off the field, she's not one to think too much up on her own, I asked during the inning and was told that by the BU, it's my call I make the decisions, at that point I'm thinking I'm not going to gain anything my continuing the discussion and all I was going to do was get my blood pressure going in the wrong direction.

Either something was lost in the discussion between player and umpire, or that is one bad umpire.

phillyj,

Do you realize that the appeal play described in the rule book for "leaving early" is for when a runner leaves her base early on a caught fly batted ball, not for leaving early before a pitch leaves the pitcher's hand? (In your post it appears that you do not.)

I'm still trying to figure out where a BR could leave early from !!!!
Talk about a failure to communicate!
