Thrown Glove

Rule question? Get it answered here.

What is the call for the following:

Batter hits ball in Right center gap. CF comes across and throws glove at ball and hits it as it rolls by. Batter ends up on 2nd. Isn't there some rule against this? I thought it was dead ball and runner advance 1 base.

6 frosties into the evening and 3 steps from the various rule books ... but, as far as my limited brain cells can remember ... most rule sets have no penalty unless the glove actually hits the ball ( aside from a possible USC ) ... once the glove strikes the ball, I believe the minimum is 2 bases but as many as four ... depending on what the Blues thought was going to happen, in their opinion, had the glove not made contact with the ball ... burp ... 7

Nice try, and you have a righteous excuse, and you were correct, there is only a penalty if the glove contacts the ball (or the ball the glove, I guess!! - LOL)

after that... (using NFHS verbage)
1) refers not only to a thrown glove but, (using NFHS 8-4-3 verbage) "a fielder intentionally conatacts a fair batted , a thrown or a pitched ball with her cap, helemt, mask, protector, pocket, detached glove or any part of the uniform which is detached from it's proper place on their person".
2) it is a delayed dead ball
3) Fair, BATTED ball = 3 (that's right THREE) bases from TOP
4) THROWN = 2 bases from time of throw
5)PITCHED = one base
6) Runners may advance further than the award at their own risk
7)if in the judgement of the umpire, the fair hit ball would have cleared the fence in flight, FOUR bases are awarded.

Speaking ASA

There is no rule prohibiting the fielder from throwing the glove. Making contact with detached equipment is another story.

In the OP, the ball stays live and the runner will be get, but is not limited to, three bases. All other scenarios are the same as hugo covered it for HS ball.
