It's a CA thing. Teams just won't travel to CA when they can't drive home. Every time ASA has Nats in CA the numbers are down. When 12u was in Roseville it was the smallest Nationals we had ever attended

CA is a factor, but not that much. Roseville had 64 teams in between Bloomington's 75 and Montgomery's 69. If you went to 10U Nats before Roseville, that was the smallest nats you ever attended. The number of teams increase as you go up the age groups, so the first Nat you attend is likely to be the smallest.

14U in San Diego last year had 118 teams after 124 in Normal, 114 in Sioux Falls and 103 in Midland. There are 127 in Salem this year. San Diego did better than other sites.

ASA should be very concerned about holding 10U in Stockton next year considering they only have 24 teams in Normal this year due to PGF adding 10U. Before that, they had 44 teams in Johnson City and 45 in Bowling Green.
