DD's Internship in San Diego

DD#3 got the internship she had been hoping for this Fall in San Diego ( that's in California, right ? ) ... Any tips on where to live, not to live ... Areas of town that are bad / good etc. ... She'll be working ( volunteering for no money ) on the Naval Base ... Any insights ?

Watch out for the terrible weather

There are a few naval bases in SD, if she'll be in Coronado there isn't a bad place to live just a lot of very expensive places. Where will she be and I might be able to help you out.
Stay away from National City, it will be cheaper but not safer.
If she's near Point Loma(just past the airport), that area is nice and very busy on the weekends as it's a destination are even for the locals.

The internship doesn't actually name the base... Except her application went to Naval Warfare Systems on Hull Street ... She'll be working with Dolphins & Sea Lions, training them to locate bombs and sweeping up their sh*t if that is any help ... This all happened in the last 24 hours so the details are still sketchy ... We didn't realize there were several Bases ...

SPAWAR is private national security defense company. Navy controls the end of Pt Loma except for the area of Cabrillo National Monument past Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery (my great uncle, a WW1 vet is buried there). The area in the bay is the sub base. Rumors about whats under the point are legion (where is Black Widow?). The western tip of Pt Loma is home to a surf break called Dolphin Tanks. Get to close to shore and you get arrested by the Feds with a $5k fine.

Zoom in Southwest of the SPAWAR address on the map and you will see a large Seaworld-like pool where she will probably be scooping sea lion poop.

Is she going to be a vet?

North of Pt Loma is Ocean Beach, or OB. She will have fun where she is at. Glad she is not at the 32nd St base. Not a fun place to be.

Thanks for everything so far ... Any info is helpful ... A Vet ? ... Perhaps ... When she was 6 she said she wanted to train Dolphins ... Then from 7 until after her Freshman year of college we never heard anything else about that dream ... After Freshman year she transferred to a college more in line with that dream ... So far she has been working with orphaned or sick sea turtles, dolphins and mostly seals / tending bar on Sundays ... She just graduated but now she is doing 2 internships, 1 for a professor in the lab and one studying Great Blue Herons nesting & mating habits in Maine ... She really wanted this one in San Diego but thought she was passed over for it ... She is way stoked ... The first we heard her mention the 'Vet' thing was just after graduation 3 weeks ago ... I'm guessing if she goes that way it would be for large animals or sea creatures ...

Paris Texas is about 350 miles north of here and the quaint little community of London is about 20 miles from here.
