BTW, the Germans were one of the biggest military powers in the world in the 30s yet had an incredible recession/deficit going on....their power was due to fear and propaganda not their economy. Hitler was a mastermind of brainwashing the lower middle classes into believing he could save them. So, your theory about China getting stronger due to increased profits from their plastic wal mart toys is refuted. Just look at our reaction to 9/11 (in which I was at the epicenter and thankfully survived). We were royally pissed off and built our military to unprecedented numbers as a reaction to advisory and not because we had a few billion extra dollars in our coffers.

Umm...wha?

Let's see if I can coherently summarize your argument here. Economic superiority does not lead to military superiority. Okay. Did they teach you that at your Ivy?

Hitler directed the full resources of the German state toward building its military. This would have led to economic catastrophe in the absence of...acquisition. Which was fine with Hitler, because he was nothing if not acquisitive. Problem was, as Japan also learned, that strategy can only carry you so far when facing an opposition with a secure, well-developed economic infrastructure and manufacturing base. The U.S. was able to ramp up from a tiny military into an unstoppable military juggernaut very quickly on the back of its economic capabilities. What's more, the U.S. was able to sustain a high military investment throughout the cold war years, eventually bankrupting the Soviet Union, which bled its inferior economic system dry in an effort to keep up. And we did it on a very small percentage of our overall GDP. That's what a strong economy gives you...the ability for sustained investment in equipment, training and technology over an indefinite period of time. Any tinpot can bankrupt his country building up its military. But can he sustain that investment, especially in the face of concerted opposition? China will be in a position to do so.

For your edification, the post 9/11 military build-up didn't even come close to "unprecedented numbers." What it did was simply remedy the gutting of the military and intelligence apparatus that took place under Clinton. This wasn't "in reaction to advisory" (whatever the hell that means), but was rather a rational response to the practical and obvious reality that we no longer had either the military or intelligence gathering capability to combat our enemies. It's one of the few things that Bush got right.

And why drag me behind a car? Much more tidy--not to mention carbon efficient--to force my children to suffocate me with a plastic bag, like your commie bedfellows did to millions of dissenters in Cambodia after we pulled out of Vietnam. Yes, that's the tried and true liberal way. If they don't agree with you, hate them...and then kill them.

Feel free to try.

Skarp ... you say insurance with high deductables is affordable ( I'm paraphrasing ) ... In many cases, people who can't afford the insurance can not afford the deductable as well ... what do you do with these people ? ... They are less fortunate than you but you need them ... they may fix your car, plumb your house, mow your yard ... deliver your paper ... clean your office ... empty your trash ... ring up your groceries, pump your gas ...and in some cases, if you can afford the insurance and can afford the deductable, when you need it most you are not covered for a particular procedure or coverage runs out ... AND you said "It costs a lot of money to provide quality medical care." ... so to compensate for this, hospitals and health care providers pad their bills while drug & insurance companies make disgusting profits ... I suppose when your insurance works for you, screw everyone else is a great philosophy ... :o

Keep waving those diplomas around, cuz you've got nothing. You're an intellectual lightweight, and we both know it.

This is what we get when schools start teaching what to think in lieu of how to think. But you're a special breed. Most Ivy-leaguers I know can't think worth a damn...but at least they are educated. At least they know a lot about history, sociology, economics, and what have you. You, on the other hand, are clueless. Your attempted lecture on military history would have been comical, but for the colossal waste of educational resources that it represented. On the other hand, it proves yet again that even the biggest dope can be successful in this great country. God Bless America!

Why, you draw them close to the bosom of the nanny state and provide them with their every want, of course.

"What do you do with these people?"...lol. Now isn't that the quintessential liberal question. How 'bout this novel idea: leave people the f alone. I don't want the government "doing" anything with me. Aside from being unworkable, in healthcare and everywhere else, it's immoral.

Well .. I have another idea for you ... pay them enough to be able to afford health care or cut your own lawn .. empty your own trash ... wash your own car ... or what ever service it is that you require so that you can enjoy your weekends watching your DD play ball ... naaaa ! ... it's more fun to just stiff the waitress on the tip ... after all, she is making $2.13 an hour ... WTF can't she afford health care ? ... lazy piece of crap ... bet she goes to work every day wishing you would pay her way ... Limme guess ? ... it's been a while since you humped concrete blocks up a scaffold for a living, hasn't it ? ...

If I want someone to mow my lawn, I will either pay what the market demands or I will do it myself. If I was mowing lawns for a living, and if it didn't pay enough to meet my lifestyle wants and needs, I would improve my skill set and find something else to do. Or I would start my own lawnmowing business. What I would not do, because it is utterly ridiculous, is complain that I don't make enough money doing what I do. Prices are a function of supply and demand...not some nefarious plot to keep people down. If you want to be valuable, and compensated accordingly, make sure that you can do something that millions of other people can't do.

And for the record, I've done every shit job under the sun at one time or another. When I wasn't satisfied with the pay for what I was doing, I didn't cry like a baby that somebody owed me more. I moved on. Every single person is free to do the same.

GIMNEPIWO,

I agree with your reasoning but you and I are fighting against an illogical thinking person (actually evil but since I don't know him personally, maybe he is just stupid and not evil). He cares only of himself and what he can get from others. He will have to answer to a much higher power than you or me, one day. People like Skarp were/are indoctrinated by the right wing propaganda machine that exists in this country. While watching C-Span today at lunch, (town hall meeting on healthcare with Barney Frank from Mass.) I came to realize that there are just a sh*t load of stupid people in this country. Their ignorance and lack of humanity are troublesome. However, we really need to just ignore them.

They set ridiculous prices to overcome the deficit they are put in having to provide free medical care to millions, and reduced-price medical care to millions more. The costs of providing quality medical care are staggering...especially given the overutilization that inevitably occurs when people don't have to pay for it. Those costs won't go away. You can't wave a magic wand and suddenly make health care "free."

There isn't enough money in our entire country to pay for all of the healthcare that people would demand if none of them had to pay for it. When people have to pay for a commodity, they use it less. This lowers demand in relation to supply, and prices come down as a result. Carolina's prosimian IQ notwithstanding, I don't know what's so difficult to understand about this.
