Actually, hybrids and electric cars. Manufacturers will be forced to push a lot of electric cars to meet 54.5 mpg overall. Do they have anything in motion to support all those electric cars - i.e. electricity generation, transmission and charging stations? You know they want to use solar and wind for that, but I haven't heard of any plans for a huge increase in production.

I had forgotten about the 2016 standard of 35.5 mpg. Most of the decreased oil consumption they tout in 2025 will be a result of that because the newest cars will only be a very small portion of the ones in use at that time.

No wonder they want to replace the gas taxes with a mileage tax.

They say the electric cars will save money, but you will make up the difference in the extra $10K-$40K premium in the purchase price of the electric car. Our electrical grid can barely handle our current power demands, imagine what will happen if you add plug in electric cars to it? Gasoline is more cost effective when comparing the "well to tank" efficiencies of gasoline vs. electricity. The Toyota Prius combines technology well, but the government funded Chevy Volt is a piece of sh*t.

I believe when DD bought her Ford Fusion Hybrid it was about 2 or 3000 more than the standard model ... She loves it ... Of course she does not have to plug it in since it recharges itself by driving it ...

One thing everyone better keep in mind is battery replacement. My brother's wife had to have a Tahoe hybrid, after 100k miles or so, battery goes out, they run in down to the local Bataan auto dealer, their ticket to get out of there was close to 8k, 7500 was the battery.

As we drift a bit...How are they gonna produce all this electricity? The Magic Wattage Fairy?...gas, coal? Solars cost per watt is outrageous with current technology (See Solyndra) Had my house 'estimated' for solar panels...enough panels to handle our needs would cost $50k+...We have enough natural gas to power the USA for 300+ hundred years but no way can we drill for it....The process to make hybrid batteries (China of course) is hard on the environment...and China tells the EPA, UN, everybody to KMA...and like you said re-sale value on hybrids suck

The answer(as always it seems) is all of the above.

Electric is a great option becasue there are so many ways to produce it (oil,coal, nuclear, solar, natural gas, wind, hydro etc....) All options need to be maximized and we need to invest in improving the grid

On the auto-side- improving average gas mileage is not a bad thing(although most studies find it actually does not reduce usage, cheaper gas(or better mileage) and people just drive more. More efficient gas engines, cleaner diesels, better hybrids and electrics are all a means. Getting more people using mass-transit is probably more effective(where feasible). The killer right now with both electric and hybrid technology is there needs to be a quantum leap in batetry technolgy.

BTW- a Prius has the same carbon footprint as a Range Rover
