This will allow lawyers to sue every organzation THEY feel are discriminating. Teams will not dare cut a kid that comes out in a wheelchair for the fear of getting sued.

This makes as much sense as having the braille pad on the drive-up ATM window.

 How you get that out if allowing a disabled kid to try out for a HS team is beyond me ... In Virginia, anyone can try out as long as they have mt the requirments ; grades, transfer regs, age etc. ... School I was at last year had a girl on Varsity that had a physical handicap ... She made the team, she started, not because she was disabled ... I can imagine there are coaches who wouldn't even look at her because one leg was half the size as the other ... How about your daughter ? ... Maybe she is not allowed to try out because she is Hispanic, short, heavy, one arm ? You know your daughter can play with one arm, but the coach won't allow her to try out ... I read nothing in there that says they have to make the team or have to play if they do make the team ... I read that they deserve a fair shot - If that means of got butterflies coming out of my ass, so be it ... Better that than a stick shoved up it .... ;)

Braille pads are on drive up ATM's because it's cheaper for the manufacturer to make one key pad for all their machines ... And some blind people do walk and actually have and spend money just like you ...

What is insulting about the OP is that fed. gov. seems to find the need to get involved. Why??
Every time they do, they seem to screw it up and cause more litigation issues.
Many people find this intrusive, I do. For some crazy reason I believe most coaches try to do the right thing.
Example: Deaf girl who can crush ball wants to try out for team. What would you do. Think she can take hand signs?
In the words or Ronald Reagan, " Government is not the solution, government is the problem".
I for one do not need the fed. gov. telling me how to act or behave, I have a wife for that, and as much as they try to control the outcome, level the playing field, and not hurt anyones feelings, with the intent of making life fair, cradle to grave. I will not trust them.
Especially the current clowns in office..

G, if you had just set up your team for the season, and a guy comes in with a sweet little kid with MS, on a rolling walker, and you have to put the kid on the varsity - and you have to play her. When I coached rec league, and then coached the school supported league, this happened to me everytime I had a team, the reason , they knew I would not complain, and I would actually encourage and play the kid. But as I read this, you as a varsity high school coach, would be required to put the kid on your varsity team, and possibly even start her - equal to all the other kids.

Life, as we both know, isn't fair. That's the way it is. There are leagues for special needs kids - and the line in the article that said that parents get tired of their kids not being treated fairly in high school and pay to put them on a select team, is typical lying bullshit.

If I read this article , we need to reduce the competition in competitive sports so that special kids can compete with non-special needs kids. That's wrong. I have a special needs grand daughter - my daughter and I find things that she can compete it and do well. That's what good parents do - not lower the competition of everyone else.

Suppose that thing that you found out that your special needs Grand Daughter could do was play softball ... Play it just as good as any 'normal' kid, even better ... She could in fact be an inspiration to all those around her ... THAT was the case I observed last year with a physically handicapped player ... Someone forgot to tell her that she couldn't do it ... I beliebve she led the team in batting at one point ... I know she led the team in heart ...

Wouldn't that be nice ... A few years back there was a coach around here who had an entire team of Swedish Bikini Models ... I'm sure he was doing the right thing ...

* EDIT; Yes, I knew girls who were better ball players who did not make the team ... But they were not tall, thin and blonde ...

I'm really glad that University HS in So Cal is smart enough to already be doing this. Guess what, they have a deaf pitcher. Good for her. AND, she is allowed to bat, imagine that!!!

Sftbll4ever:
Did the fed. gov. tell them they had to?? Probable not.
Uno has posted many inspiring threads on athletes who have disabilities. I am pretty sure that the coaches were not instructed they the must choose these individuals by gov.
You can make it fool proof, but you can not make it damn fool proof.
There will always be those that will look on with distain at others who are not like themselves, and there are those that see more to something than meets the common eye. It is these people with their free will that makes it better.
Now help me understand why the fed. gov. must get involved. :?

Probably one of the worst pieces of legislation ever written from a practicality and cost vs benefit standpoint.

What I dont understand is - any body that fits the age categories can register to play now. There is nothing that says that - little Rose has a learning disability and doesnt think fast enough - so she cant register to play softball. With any luck, she has parents that understand what her capabilities are - and put her in sports that are built for kids like that - like Kickball - which is what we did with my granddaughter.

So my question, other than the obvious (democrats can solve any problem by passing more laws and raising taxes), why would something like this be done ?

If it goes into effect, I think there ought to be limits in basketball to a) raise the basket to 12 feet so you really have to have a skill to score baskets, and b) put ethnic background limits per team - its not fair having athletically gifted ethnic groups playing together - spread them out.

For its intent the ADA was a good thing...but its been twisted, misued and been used for many a fraudulent things...Around here we have a 'pro' gang of ADA suit folks..walk in a place, find some minute ADA issue which may cost a ton to get fixed, but really isnt necessary...But instead of an actual suit...Theyre always willing to 'make a deal'...cheaper for someone to pay somebody off vs some huge project...
Had a guy used to work for me...besides staying on the phone with his neurotic wife 90% of the time...he knew my DD played ball...He had a son who was a 'little person'....Whats the PC term for a Midget?...kid was barely 3 ft tall...12U REC Ball player...That guy would cry for hrs on how his son was always being 'dissed' for All-Stars and turned down by Travel Teams...I really didnt have anything to tell him...exactly what would he bring to a travel team?...
I work for Uncle Sam...we discriminate daily...no fat people, no dumb people, no crippled folks, no ADD folks...no very skinny folks, folks with one testicle (N/A for gals:-) no asthmatics...to one with excessive gas, excessive acne...bad teeth...tailbone cysts...huge # of folks we cant take...cant take for a reason
