I would love to see a follow up interview of the woman in Chicago made famous in that YouTube video who said Obama was going to pay her gas and mortgage.

But will she notice a tax increase if she doesn't have a job? Not Obama but we the people will continue paying her bills.

Wouldn't the tax increase affect her unemployment in the end?

To a degree- but small

It is troubling that so many were surprised by this. This was a temporay "vacation" on payroll taxes focused on middle to lower incomes as a stimulus. The key word was temporary. Since these payroll taxes is what contributes to ss & medicare etc..., any long term vacation had a potential negative impact to those programs

The "payroll tax vacation" move helped him get re-elected, it stimulated sh*t. The low information voter took the bait and cast their vote for the man offering the false promise. Now they are scratching their a$$ wondering what the hell happened.

Payroll tax vacations tend to be a good "quick fix" for getting some money quickly into an economy- especially on a short term basis. The theory is it puts money in the hands of consumers tha fastest. It is always a temporary/shor-term move. This was put in place, probably kept in place longer due to the election. Normally these things are usually in place for a quarter or a year

The Bush tax cuts were meant to be temporary, originally.
Ladies, if a man tells you he will fix it, he will fix it. There is no reason to remind him about it every six months.

Not true - they put a 10-year term on them because of the Byrd Rule. They did it because they had to, not because they wanted it to be temporary.

Pdad is correct. They were never intended to be temporary, but the GOP didnt have enough votes. Anytime you have legislation that impacts the deficit/surplus more than ten years out, you have to have a minimum of 60 votes in the Senate. A simple majority will get it passed, but a majority that is less than 60 votes invokes the parliamentary Byrd Rule which has a built in sunset. Same with the estate tax cuts.

The goal was to at least get the tax cuts in place, then hopefully within 10 years have a 60 seat majority in the Senate to make them permanent. That they never gained those seats, so the curs expired. The current legislation passed last week had 60 votes, so the "cuts" on those making between $250k and $399k became permanent.

I chuckle whenever I hear someone say the tax rates are permanent - they're just in effect until the next time they're changed. There has to be a better term for it - impermanent, temporal?

But hey, the money is going to a good cause.....

Democratic state lawmakers, led by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, have blocked welfare-reform legislation that would end “sinful spending” by preventing people receiving government benefits from withdrawing taxpayer-funded cash at jiggle and gin joints
