I don't have a daughter that plays 1st, 3rd or pitcher. She does primarily play infield at one of the other positions.
I have read the comments of this thread, as well as the one where the DD was injured. I have read the comment by one person who was worried about kids wearing so much protectve equipment they would be like a lacrosse (sp?) player. I have also read the comments about parents rights and in almost any other case I would take this stand as well. However, everyone needs to take emotion out of this and think logically.
First, there is a HUGE difference between protecting the head and protecting another body part. I have yet to see a kid get blinded by a hit taken to the elbow. I have yet to see a kid brain damaged from a shot to the leg. I have yet to see a kid die from a shot to the the butt...I could go on and on. A shot to the head could result in any of these things happening, and if only one kid is protected from this type of major injury then it is worth the rule. The playing field would be even so no one team would have any advantages over another. Once one kid has suffered this kind of major injury it is to late to go back an say maybe we had our priorities in the wrong place on this topic.
Two, while in almost any other case I would support the parental rights viewpoint, your decision to not have your child playing these three positions wear a mask could have a major impact on my child. On the thread where the DD was injured there was a mom (cannot remember the name at this point) who hit one of those shots that hit the face of a 3B. It hampered her ability to hit effectively after that because she was scared of injuring another player. And before someone comes back with the lame composite bat argument that was used against me in the injured DD post, I am fairly sure the mom that hit this ball was not using a composite bat as these are fairly new to the softball world.
I do not believe in placing to many rules on on this sport beyond what we have already, but I do think we have a responsibility as grown-ups to do everything we can to protect our children from major injury. A broken bone or torn ligament will heal...blindness, brain-damage and death have a long-term impact on the child and their families, as well as the child hitting the ball. All parents should use the common sense to protect their children from these types of injuries. Some, for reasons beyond my comprehension, put this game and their "rights" above the safety of their child. Sometimes you have to make rules for those who do not think for themselves...whether you want to or not.
