Daddy Ball

There are a couple of things about daddy ball coaches that everyone forgets.

First of all if it wasn't for the mommy's and the daddy's who volunteer their time most of the kids out there wouldn't have any place to play.

Most of these mommy's and Daddy's that everyone slams at least had the balls to step up and take a team back in wreck ball and do all the crap that goes with it.

I notice that the majority of the people who complain about Mommy and Daddys ballers are the same people that are too busy to help with teams, or help with coaching. Most of the time these are the same people who drop their kids off for practice and then disappear only to show back up 20 to 30 minutes after practice is over. Once they move into travel ball they are no better. They don't volunteer for anything and they don't help with anything. All they do sis sit in the stands and bitch and complain.
Usually the people who complain the most about daddy ball coaches are the parents of the weakest players. It can't possibly be little suzy's fault. It must be the coach who is to blame. Why look those 5 girls play all the time. What's up with that.

Sure there are bad coaches out there, daddy ball or not. Ever notice how the better players parents don't seem to have problems with daddy ball? Are they just better at picking teams? More involved with their DD's so they know what kind of coaches and teams to play for. Sometimes they are even the coaches but in a never ending circle as soon as someone is unhappy they are named as daddy ball coaches.

Here is an idea. All you people who just want to complain about the coaches. You know the ones that give up their weekends and week nights so that your kid has a place tpo play. Why don't you volunteer to help. Even better, why don't you try spending several days a week helping your DD to be a better player. You might actually learn something and help your kid get better and then you won't have a problem with the whole daddyball thing.

Until you get out there and get involved, why don't you shut the h@@@ up. Quit whining aND TRY DOING SOMETHING FOR A CHANGE.

I know the daddyball whiners will jump on here and take shots. So yes I am a coach. No I don't coach my DD. She played softball in college and has graduated.

We have been doing well . first week end of HS ball (not H/S) H/S team w/o HS coaches play in a tourney. Any way I learned a valuable lesson about the auto sign in on HB. My log in was taken for a joy ride that evening. But I can tell you that "BO J" stands for....... I'll PM you.

Most know everything but few will do anything. Some of the best and most respected TB coaches in our area are indeed dads or moms. Many have moved their respective DDs on through HS or college and continue to coach because they love it.
Daddy Ball is a derogatory term used mostly by those parents whose kids can’t play and can’t beat out the coach’s kid. Don’t get me wrong there is still some daddy ball going on out there. If the kid can’t play and coach still plays her then it’s indeed DB. But in my experience, at least at the higher levels the coach’s can coach and their kids are one of the better players on the team. Coincidence??? I think not.

I have coached back in "wreck" and have helped coach or helped with practice with DD's TB teams. So I've rarely dropped her off and drove away (although she's driving herself now anyway ). And I still don't like "daddy ball" as I define "daddy ball." It's not just a guy coaching his daughter. That can be done correctly and successfully by a good coach who can teach the game. I define a "daddy ball" coach as a guy who does not have a clue how to develop players, doesn't teach the players a thing, just holds a tryout and hopes he attracts some good players with the team's reputation that has been built by better coaches before him. When he lucks into getting any stud players he sucks up to their parents because he can't develop players on his own. God help the player on his team who gets into a batting slump, or drops a ball in the outfield, or mishandles a ground ball. The Daddy Ball coach will bench her because he can't teach her how to improve her game, so benching her is his only option. After every season, more than half his team moves on to greener pastures.

God bless the Dads who step up to coach any team in any sport, but the good ones are the ones who aren't so arrogant and egotistical to think they know it all right from the start and make the effort to learn how to coach and how to develop players. The rest are Daddy Ball coaches.

I agree. Dad's coaching doesn't necessarily make the team a daddy ball team. Praise should be given to any parent who devotes time to kids, and I think it generally is. Supporting a guy for doing right by kids is one thing. Letting your DD play for him is another.

don't worry doittoit, about mid spring we will start hearing allllllllll about it.

I agree with most of what is said here about Dads (or anyone for that matter) donating a large part of their life to coach lower levels of softball. It needs to happen in order for the younger girls to have a place to play for a few years while they learn the game. During this time, parents will call "Daddy Ball" when their not so good kid doesn't get the playing time "she deserves". Once a kid makes it to about 16U, her parents will generally stop with the Daddy Ball accusations because they realize the fact that the "Daddy Ball" coaches were necessary.

Once spring season starts back up we will hear all about the "Daddy Ball" coaches. We will hear it from most of the parents that will never see 16U softball and from some parents who just haven't learned yet.

I am actually looking forward to hearing from these people.
