High School Daughter loses interest due to HS Program

How many you have had daughters play for very good club/travel teams with good coaching up until High School and then dd loses interest because of the program at High School. I know some lose it because of boys and other interests, but this is primarily because of her Dallas HS. Do you know of any dd's that have sat out of high school ball and only play club/travel ball? She hasn't asked me about it, but I wanted to be ready if she does.

I have had this conversation with my DD. She already knows that the varsity coach for her HS is a horrible coach. She is actually looking forward to playing on the HS team to have some fun, play with her friends and work on her skills.

We got close last year with both girls saying 'screw it' because of nonsense from the hc. Both girls took some harrassment from the hc because they both played vb and both ran track (only girls that did) and didnt have proper time to spend on fund raisers and both were healing up from travel ball and vball injuries - were told they weren't committed enough - hilarious 'the pot calling the kettle black' issues. I gave them the 'this wont be the last time you play or work for misguided individuals' and told them they needed to support their team mates regardless of the nonsense. They did.

This year the issue is going to be the hc wants to go with one pitcher, its her last year (she is my pitching daughter's best friend) and rather than go into the season prepared for a long run and going deep into the playoffs with 2 pitchers- he wants to set records with one pitcher. He has been this kid's only pitching coach and he is trying to prove that he is a great pitching instructor - rather than focus on the entire team. My worry is that he is only going to warm up his pitcher rather than warm up both - and sure as the world, his pitcher is going to get hurt and he will try to put in my kid without warmup - he will get a major surprise if that happens. She is playing ss and so will get some good time at that position - but she does love the circle.

My oldest, now playing D1 ball, wasnt good enough as a freshman playing for this same high school - we had to go through the same nonsense then, she took it with a sense of humor. The way we looked at it and the way I suggest to you, is to keep her in it, the coach will look like the fool - thats definitely what happened here.

DD is homeschooled so in Texas she doesn't play HS ball. She works very hard on improvement during that time. It doesn't seem to be a problem. In the fall she plays with the HS team and she enjoys that.

We had a coach who was brutal, we kind of knew this going in but never thought how bad it would get. If she still wants to play club ball that is a good thing, my dd has had so much abuse from her coach she is gun shy at this point. She has not played since the end of summer, he tb team went dark. Most of the TB team girls play on her hs team, they don't pitch so don't get the abuse she did, so their tb team does not play or practice. I am finally coming to terms with she may never play again. She was very set on playing in college but I just don't see that happening now. If I could go back and do it again, I would have raised hell with this coach from day 1 instead of letting her handle it and saying "no mom don't, you'll just make it worse" It is hard to not play HS as they have so much time off.

Good luck with this and go with your gut, its usually right.

I can relate to this. I'm in the same boat it just made me sick when my oldest told me that she wanted to start playing more volley ball and less softball. I've been devoted parent and coach to softball for years ? I guess you just support them however you can and hopefully one day she'll find that love again. Thank God I still have one that is very interested ball otherwise you can stick a fork in me I'm done Good Luck with Your DD

This type of thread shows up every year. All I can say is that I wish that high school coaches actually read heybucket because I believe 80 percent of them would be shocked to learn that most of their star players and star player's parents think they are horrible coaches, motivators, etc. . .

And my personal favorite would be for them to learn that . . . no, except for maybe one percent, they are not going to "coach high school for a couple of more years and then move into the college ranks."

It wouldnt be a major suprise here. I told him some time back. Not that my kid is a star here, there are a lot of good players.

Your DD will be scouted at exposure tournaments very few if any will go to your High School games. So if there are signs that High School ball will make your DD lose interest, just give her the option to opt out next season and let her continue to play travel ball.

Like pretty much everyone, my girls got their exposure from travel. High School is supposed to be fun - but the college coaches came down to watch my older dd practice with her team and met the h/s coach there. I think that was probably unusual - but I think it was done because I am the head coach and could not be trusted to be objective about my two brats. I know I dont trust me.
