TWAS 2 WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Revised by Hoof less Joe Russell
'Twas 2 weeks before Christmas, when all through Craig Ranch
The bats were all standing in the dugouts with care,
In hopes that the Dallas Donkey-Gold, soon would be there;
The fans then arrived and were nestled all snug in their seats,
While visions of “homers” danced in their heads;
And mamma in her snuggie, and I in my Donkey cap,
Had just arrived at Craig Ranch, after a short winter's nap,
When out on the Field 6 there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the auto to see what was the matter.
Away to the bleachers I flew like a flash,
There the moon on the breast of the dampened green outfield
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Ford PU, and 13 tiny Donkeys,
With a driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be the "Coach".
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, D! now, F! now, N! now K! now E!
Now “G” and J too!
On, F on B! on, A, on M, on K, and M!
To the top of the tournament standings! To the top of the wall!
Now bash away! bash away! bash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the top of the tournament standings the Donkeys they flew,
With the sleigh full of “Whippings”, and the Coach too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the field
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down in the dugout the Coach came with a bound.
He was dressed all in Donkey team gear, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with infield dirt and lime;
A bundle of “whippings” he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
(Probably had one too many!)
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of tobacco he held tight in his teeth,
And the spit from it encircled the infield like a wreath;
He had a thin face and a little beer belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings in Craig Ranch with whippings ;
First Texhoma Dynamite lost 4-2, Then the Texas Breeze got one too (2-0),
The Prospects 8-0 and the Nitro defused 8-0 and the pool games were done!
On to the brackets and have some fun.
First came the Texas Force and how they cried when they got a 9-1 package with a bow tie!
Then the Vipers all in black were staggered aback 19-1, what a whack.
Then the touted Fusion came to see what Coach had left for thee.
They took home a 16-0 spanking holding their head down by their knees.
Then the Donkeys took a short nap and bounded back for the Sunday attack.
Again they met the Texas Breeze and gave them a blow, 11-5 they cried Oh No!
Yet the jolly old Donkeys were not quite done they had one package to go that was still undone!
On came the F and she threw like an ace knocking off the Breeze again which made for twice in one day (2-0) and lo and behold then what should appear but another Donkey Championship!
then Coach ,he turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, out of the stadium he rose;
He sprang to his Pickup, to his Donkey Gold team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all Donkeys a good-night.
PS: We will back in 2011!
HEE HAW!
