If a coach is "in it for the girls" he probably either is affiliated with TNL (sorry...couldn't resist) or coaches with some inflexible "ideal" in mind. Almost all do-gooders define "good" narcissistically--that is, they serve their own egos first and foremost (which of course to them is inseparable from doing "good").
Give me a profit seeker over a do-gooder any day. Someone who has to deliver a salable product. Someone who can't afford to serve his own ego...because to make money he has to consistently meet his customers' expectations.
In softball, daddyball is an interesting third category, and one that can swing either way. Smart daddyballers realize that they have to run their team more like businessmen (i.e., rationally) and less like self-absorbed or dd-absorbed jackasses (irrationally) if they want to have any success at all attracting and keeping good players/families. In other words, even though they don't receive their payment in $$ they still understand that they are selling a product.
The other kind of daddyballers are, like do-gooders, driven by ego and narcissism...only in their case the "ideal" is DD, and all things that serve her are, by definition, "good."
Not that I favor professional softball coaches (at least not until the elite levels). There isn't enough money in the sport to incentivize true competence and dedication. So until there is, long live daddyball!!
