Let's just speculate that I'm crazy enough to contemplate trying to get to Texas in early August this year. If we come, pretty sure our heavy all black uniforms aren't going to be a real aid to keeping my team healthy on the field.

Any tips from anyone who's bought uniforms for extreme high temps?

YES MY TEAM THIS SEASON WILL BE WEARING A SPECIAL FABRIC DEVELOPED BY NASA & SECRETLY USED NOW BY TEAM MIZUNO.

It is light weight & breathes very well in the TEXAS HEAT.

I've seen plenty of teams in all black. I've never quite understood it myself, but the girls seem to be ok with it. It does tend to get pretty hot here in the summer though. What about a mesh practice type jersey? You may save a little money that way if you don't plan to play here a lot.

Our team has worn all black (jersey, pants and socks) in the past. Everytime the girls were asked, they said it never bothered them. We've switched it up a little this past season but still wear a lot of black. This is in Houston wear the humidity can really get to you as well. They have played 5-6 games in the summer heat back to back and while they looked exhausted at the end of the day, they were all standing, well sort of.

Color is not as big an issue as fabric weight and breathability. You'll do better in light weight mesh type tops that breathe. As someone else noted the humidity will get you about as fast as the heat down here and you need fabric that allows sweat to evaporate quickly, well, as quickly as it can in 60% humidity. And if we're talking 14 yrs or older, then don't come in shorts, the girls will hate the tan line they leave with.

All kidding aside, the two best things you can do as a coach are:

1) Read up on and learn the early warning signs of heat stress and heat exhaustion so you can recognize if one of your players is headed for trouble.
2) Read up on proper hydration practices and be ruthless in enforcing them. Poor hydration will end your day early no matter what you are wearing...

With the humidity down here -we use moisture wicking fabric. Under Armor or similar work well. Yes light colors are better not "cooler" but cooler, physics still trump fashion. Hope to see you in August.
