Looking at 10u pool play results...

How in the heck do you not step off base when you're up 10 instead of ringing up 22 runs?

Seems a particular coach must have been bullied in grade school. You had a great opportunity to teach your girls about sportsmanship...instead you embarrased them...and I especially hope their parents.

Perhaps you should step back 5 feet and play for development instead of your ego.

Actually, the coach decided to go for a 2 point conversion when they scored their first touchdown which is how they ended up with 22 points. The other touchdowns were scored on special teams and defense so he didn't have the opportunity to take a knee.

I believe it was Mike Ditka who said, “If you don’t want the score run up on you, PLAY DEFENSE!” Now with all due respect to Iron Mike he was referring to NFL teams and not 10U softball teams.

However, the fact remains this was an indoor tournament. You get almost no time to play (one hour per game) and offense is a huge focus for teams sharpening their skills by playing inside.

We have no idea how this game was played. What if the winning team bunted most of their lineup? Personally I see this as more of a “courtesy” to the defense as stepping off. Even if they did not bunt but instead chose to swing away, I have to believe the defense had ample opportunities to make plays to get three outs and finish an inning. Perhaps the losing pitchers struggled with control and many of the runs were on walks.

You say teach sportsmanship, Gold Elite. I disagree. As a coach and parent I would rather the team continue to give my team the opportunity to get them out then to show us “mercy” by stepping off the bases. What is to be learned from that? If the opposing team’s coach is tired of getting their butt kicked, throw in the towel.

At some point, we need to stop blaming the winner.

Kidcanhit02 - There's winning and then there's winning 22-1 and there is a way to win 22-1. Personally, I am not and never do blame the winners. At some point, hopefully, the players and families of the team that lost a game like that stop and ask "Okay, what do we do so that doesn't happen again? How do we get better to avoid those games?". Hopefully the winning coach took the opportunity to teach the girls a bit of humility after that game as I am sure that were pretty hyped up.

I bet he's the president of his homeowners association as well.

Softball_Parent_72:
Your first response was funny.
Your second...
"At some point, hopefully, the players and families of the team that lost a game like that stop and ask "Okay, what do we do so that doesn't happen again? How do we get better to avoid those games?".

- These same questions should be asked after EVERY game. And they can have the same impact when the score is 10-0 and the remaining runs are saved because they stepped off base.

I wouldn't expect anything different from you.
However, the fact remains this was an indoor tournament. You get almost no time to play (one hour per game) and offense is a huge focus for teams sharpening their skills by playing inside.

- How about we sharpen our pitching, our defense, etc. You can also work on base stealing. Steal 2nd, then step off. And, truthfully, playing a team that you beat 22-1, do you really think there is any way you are going to sharpen your abilities? C'mon man.

You say teach sportsmanship, Gold Elite. I disagree. As a coach and parent I would rather the team continue to give my team the opportunity to get them out then to show us “mercy” by stepping off the bases. What is to be learned from that?

- Again, what you learn from teams stepping off the bases is that you need to work harder or you're not fundamentally sound or you are playing out of your league. But you learn this just the same at 10-0 and stepping off. The girls, the coaches, the parents all know when they are playing against a team that is light years better. It doesn't take 22 runs in a 65 minute game to prove that.

You don’t know me, so I am not sure how you have an expectation? I have been on both sides of a butt kicking. I never wanted someone to step off in a losing game and I regretted every time I stepped off in a winning game. I can honestly say no good for my team ever came of my stepping off the bases to get out. No good came for either team.

I will just say this… The 22-1 score is NOT the fault of the winning team. At any point the losing coach could throw in the towel and end the game. If that team knew they were “out of their league” then stop the game and move on. Don’t be upset or surprised however if the score goes through roof if you choose to keep playing. Gold Elite: Why do you feel it is the winning team's job to control the score? That is the most laughable opinion I have ever heard.

The ONLY issue I could take with the score is if in the course of scoring 22 runs the game went well over the allotted time limit. Nothing is more frustrating then being an hour plus behind at Sportzone. If a close game causes the delay, fine. But if a coach inconsiderately kept an inning going and set things behind, that would be upsetting.

Recreation leagues have provisions to control blow outs. Typically there is batter per inning or runs per inning limits. If you are a strong believer in offenses only scoring a “fair” amount of runs (which I have no idea what that is), I strongly suggest you get involved in your local league and leave travel alone. For the record I have no problems with recreational leagues, I am simply letting you know there are places you can watch games that do not allow scores to be run up.

The winning coach probably wasn’t bullied as a kid. He probably has the same inflated ego most travel coaches. More importantly, however, he had a far superior team. His team executed exactly as he taught them. I have to believe leaving early and getting out intentionally were not in his previous week’s practice plan. Nor should they ever be. He did nothing but put a better team on the field. He is guilty of nothing.

Another fun point of stepping off (and this is how I know you are a parent and not a coach): especially at 10U, the other team’s players do not even realize what is going on. All they know is the inning is over. They don’t know the other team did something special to make it end. By stepping off the only people that are being pacified are the parents of the losing team. At no point should any coach give a hoot about the parents on the other team.

The 22-1 win/loss was forgotten about by both teams 2 minutes after the teams were dismissed by their coaches. Maybe even sooner than that. The winning coach started thinking about the next game and gave no thought to the last game. The losing coach hopefully walked away with pages of notes of things to work on at practice. The only people who were upset about the result were possibly the losing team’s parents and you. All people who have little to do with the development of either team.
