How do you score this?

by backstop13 » Thu Apr 26, 2012 9:02 am

Watching the Redlegs play last night. After the Rolen homer, the Reds get a single from Ludwick. Up comes Hanigan to bunt him over to 2B. Lays it down...the pitcher throws it over the 1B head. Runners advance to 2B and 3B. That is scored as a SAC, then advance to 2B on E1. Correct?

I say yep.

MLB.com
10.08 Sacrifices
The official scorer shall:
(a) Score a sacrifice bunt when, before two are out, the batter advances one or more runners with a bunt and is put out at first base, or would have been put out except for a fielding error, unless, in the judgment of the official scorer, the batter was bunting exclusively for a base hit and not sacrificing his own chance of reaching first base for the purpose of advancing a runner or runners, in which case the official scorer shall charge the batter with a time at bat

It was not my intention to get into this, but since you posted the rule it hit me. This is the rub in softball. With slappers, they get credit for a SAC. While technically she is moving the runner, she is also doing so with the intent of getting on. What is the general consensus on this? Let me guess...if she gets on safe, it's a hit, if not or if there's an error it's a SAC. :D

Funny story backstop. My DD's frosh year of high school. They're working on SAC bunts. DD drag bunts, coach corrects her and says "just square around and SAC bunt". DD looks at him and says "I don't really do that, I'm a slapper". Admittedly I probably failed her, I never taught her to SAC bunt.

What? He didn't want her to get on base AND move the runner?!?!?
