Crystal - why does it take so long to get the summer schedule posted?
How many berths is Indiana alloted in 2010?

Whew - $400 for a tournament.

Sidd,

To answer your questions:

1. Why does it take so long to post the schedule and how many berths do we get?

The berths are one of the reasons it takes so long to compile the schedule. The dates of the major tournaments do not change from year to year, except when we have to adjust due to the IHSAA tournament as was the case last year.

Because the number of berths are determined by ASA code and the ASA code is not finalized until the November ASA National Council Meeting, we cannot post a schedule until late November at the earliest. As far as the number of berths, these are currently determined based on number of teams registered with Indiana ASA. So, the more teams that register with Indiana ASA, the more berths we get. These registrations are as of mid-October, but the reports of registrations are generally not finalized by the national office until around January. So, for 2010, Indiana will have 3 berths per division for sure, and potentially a fourth depending on how the final report comes out.

Another factor in determining our schedule is tournament sites. Indiana ASA tries to get the best sites possible that a) register all of their teams with ASA, b) are able to provide quality facilities and staff to run a tournament to our standards, and c) are willing to work with us to improve on things and make changes as issues arise. There are very few sites willing or able to do all of the above things to make our tournaments run smoothly. We are constantly working with our tournament hosts and add and remove sites as necessary. If anyone knows of sites willing to work with us, we are always open to discussions, but the sites must be willing to adhere to our standards.

2. Why so much for our tournament fees?

We typically are among the lower fees if you look across softball organizations. We try to keep our costs fair so that teams can participate, but must have fees high enough to cover our operating costs. The tournament fees have not increased from a year ago, however, we have removed the early bird discount due to many teams abusing this privilege (paying the early bird fee after the early bird date).

Here is a breakdown of the costs to the Indiana ASA JO Program when running a tournament:

$65 per team assessment fee paid to Indiana ASA Commissioner (Wayne Myers)
$25 per umpire per game fee (2 umpires per game, 3 umpires on final 4 games in many divisions)
$50 per night per umpire average hotel fee
$175 each to each site's ASA Representative and Umpire in Chief
$39 per dozen for balls (we try to recycle balls, but because most teams do not return game balls to the umpires after games, we are forced to use more balls per tournament)
Miscellaneous printing and supplies costs

As you can see above, there is very little to no money left over of the tournament fee due to operations costs, particularly with our smaller tournaments. The hosts sites are the ones making money as they get to keep the gate and concessions profits.

I hope I have answered your questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like further information. My contact information can be found on our website.

Crystal,
We had 5 berths last year(16U), why would they go down with every 14U team thinking they need to play up? I would think the numbers would still be increasing as have they the last few years. Do they use total ASA registered(men, women, girls,A,B,C and so on)? If they use October as the cut off, is it for the 09 season? My guess is that most teams have not done anything as far as 2010 goes! If they use 09 numbers, i would think we would have more teams than 08! Anyway, thanks for the info this early! This is the earliest it's been out and confirmed that i can remember! Although my wife says my memory S#<ks!!!

$400 for a 90 min. or 7 inn. 4 game guarantee still very reasonable.

From ASA Code Article 516 Section 6 (found at:http://downloads.asasoftball.com/about/pdf/asa_code.pdf):

"Association Berths based on previous year’s Girls’ Fast Pitch registrations:
Associations registering 201 – 999 teams receives one ( 1 ) berth,
for associations above 999 teams, those associations will receive
an additional berth for each increment of 500 team registrations.
As an example, an association that registers 2900 teams would
receive 5 total berths. The best way to determine the berths is to
take total registered teams and divide by 500 – the number of
berths is the whole number – no rounding up."

Indiana ASA was down about 700 total Girls' Fast Pitch teams this past year (2009). The majority of our registrations actually come from league teams and not travel teams. Losing even a mid-size league can affect our numbers dramatically.
