2011 miss softball canidates

Katie Harrison is my pick. She is hitting .678 with 9 HR's, 11 doubles and 34 RBI in only 59 at bats. Next year she will be a middle of the order power hitter at an SEC school (Arkansas). She plays on an 18-2 Noblesville team and has done her best work behind the plate. Opponents do not run on her, yet she has picked off 10 baserunners that were not attempting to steal. Plus she has managed two Freshman pitchers beautifully.

I would agree with the Katie Harrison pick. I watched her play last night. 3 for 4 with 2 HR and 4 RBI (4 HR in last two games). She has an great head on her shoulders and deserves a hard look. Plus team is ranked #2 in 4A.

Katie Harrison is a great player, but before we ordain her our "queen" of the diamond for 2011, let's make sure we have all of the facts.

I would love to see an RPI ranking of the Indiana high schools, but since there isn't one I might suggest that we look at the schedules of the top 10 4A schools to determine who has had the most difficult schedule this year. I don't think Noblesville's schedule has been all that difficult. Noblesville plays in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference - HSE, Zionsville, Westfield, Lafayette Jeff., Brownsburg, Harrison, Fishers, McCutcheon and Avon.

Are the coaches in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference really that arrogant, or do they lack the necessary acumen to know that it might not be wise to pitch to one of the best hitters out there? One HR - tolerable depending on the situation. Two HRs in the same game - totally intolerable no matter what the situation.

I have been touting Whitney Arion, but Katie Harrison is equally deserving. There seems to be constant debate about the schedule or competition that each player plays and I think it is getting unreasonable. Whitney, Katie, Andrea Filler, etc, are dominating virtually whomever is in the opposing dugout and they have NO CONTROL over who that is! These players have been dominant for 4 years and it is crazy to slight them because their respective conferences are not as strong as they were last year. Having coached all three of these players for several years in travel, I can guarantee that they are prime time performers against the very best competition and shine brighter on the biggest of stages. Evaluate them on lots of criteria, but forget the opponents records........these three players get better against better teams and just win. Also, be careful overlooking top players who play at 1A or 2A schools; it is much harder to post huge stats when your team is shallow on talent and depth. Anybody that has sat on a bucket knows that you can make the very best hitter irrelevant if there are not other good hitters in front of and behind the stud.

I think two players have separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Katie Harrison and Whitney Arion are having sensational seasons. Both of them are putting up video game like numbers. Not only are they playing great as individuals but they are the unquestioned leaders of two very good softball teams. I do believe this is the year a non pitcher is recognized as Miss Softball in Indiana.

A statement was made that Noblesville had as tough a schedule as anyone. I'm sorry, but I didn't agree with the statement. Last time I checked, I was entitled to an opinion. I am also entitled to an opinion on coaching decisions being made in the HCC given the stats I have seen.

My statements were not intended to to take anything away from Katie Harrison, the Noblesville team, or their respective accomplishments. Read the statements, don't read into them. Katie Harrison is a great player and is deserving of every accolade and/or award she receives.

Gunshy, I agree with you. I wish those that vote on any of the awards had the ability to see the girls play the best of the best. If they did, they likely would have the same difficult task they are facing now.
