What will Mr. Avery the AD do when the parents of a kid that forked out $900 do when they schedule the meeting to ask the question we paid to play why is our kid not playing????

We pay over $700 in CA for HS softball, including fees, fundraising and transportation. That’s minimum you can always donate more.

You know that's going to be an issue for certain parents. You already see it in TB so why wouldn't you see it in HS?

The problem I foresee is those kids who are capable of making the team and those capable of starting but their parents can't afford it so they won't even try out. There has to be some kind of arrangements for those families.

As much as the IHSAA seems to muddle thru efforts to keep competition is some appearance of balance, I cannot imagine that they would not take some action to try to legislate the haves and the have nots. The gap could become very wide very quick in the larger school systems that have the largest debt in a poor economy.
As I take a step back and look at it, this situation for the larger schools will now mirror what the single A schools face every year competing against the smaller private schools. Public schools will be at a further competitive disadvantage to the private schools if the public schools eliminate athletes unable to pay to play.

At my daughters public school in Louisville we have paid anywhere from $600 to $900 per year to play. School contributes only to pay for umpires and bus transportation. All else is out of parents pocket or fund raised.

What happens when your DD doesn't play and you spent 5,6,$900 to play? When a HS team carries 20+ to a tournament and plays 10 there will be big issues!! How many girls do you dress Varsity?

We carry 30 players for freshman jv and varsity teams combined. So most kids play somewhere.

Better freshman play frosh plus JV and a little varsity.

I'm lucky - my dd plays. Others I wonder how and why they do it.

Any kid who participates in extracurricular activities should pay the cost of the activity (softball, band, etc...especially football). If a parent can't pay, then an opportunity to 'work' in lieu of fees should be provided to the student or parent. School administrators (with current funding) should be focusing on what they obviously aren't doing....teaching!

I am curious what you mean by "teaching"?
