USSSA National Convention

by The Farm » Sun Nov 29, 2009 7:30 pm

It sounds like most agree that USSSA is not up to par with ASA or NSA, at least not in Indiana... yet.

One thing I like about the softball sanctioning bodies in general, is that they offer different levels of competition classifications (ie. A, B, C, etc.). In baseball you don't see this as much. At least at the older age groups, 14 and on up. At the younger levels, if I remember correctly, it was either "Open" or "Rec"...

Consequently, we've gone to a lot of top tournaments over the years that would do their best to seed teams during pool play, but it didn't always work out that the best 4 or 8 or 16 teams moved on to the single elimination rounds. Sometimes 2 or 3 top teams would be grouped into 1 pool with only the top team advancing while another pool winner would be a weaker team that advanced by default because of the lack of quality teams they were pooled with... Softball seems to me to be ahead of the curve with their classification approach.

I'm assuming that the reason most teams want to play in a "sanctioned" tournament is in hopes of advancing to a National Tournament? If not, other than the competition that a sanctioned tournament might attract, is there any real advantage in playing in one and having to spending the extra money in entry fees and/or sanctioning fees?

Obviously, most of my experience is with baseball, so forgive me if I ask too many stupid questions or try comparing softball to baseball too often :) But, with BB there are 3 or 4 top level tournaments that we always tried to go to each year. None of these were sanctioned, but all had built a reputation for being well ran tournaments with quality fields, umpires, and most of all, they attracted the top teams from around the country. Are there any SB tournaments out there that are not "sanctioned" that everyone wants to go to year after year? If so, is it mainly because of the competition or are there other reasons?

Thanks,
The Farm

Sanctioning fees cover tournament insurance as well as legitimize a path to nationals. The cost to sanction a tournament is variable and set by the local representative for the national body. That means it varies greatly. In MN it's $75 to sanction a tourney USSSA and $60 to sanction a tourney ASA. But I've heard that tournament sanction cost in CA for ASA is more like $450.

When it's $60-$75 split among 16+ teams, it's not really relevant to worry about the value your team is getting for paying $5. IME USSSA "A" nationals is roughly equivalent to a N,S,E regional "A" ASA national. Western regional ASA with it's proximity to all the powerhouse teams might be better, but I haven't attended one.

I also like that Softball tourney's with their non elimination in pool play structure are superior to the baseball tourney's that eliminate teams in pool play. I think this has more to do with pitch limits than anything else. A girls softball tourney where the winner plays 9 games between pool and bracket isn't uncommon and can be accomplished with 2 pitchers and sometimes one(not my recommendation however). For boys to play 9 games in 2 days they might have to roster 20 kids, and regardless the pitching quality of pitcher #8 might be so far below #1-3 that it really would alter the quality of the games.

The "goto" tournament in MN softball has been the Eagan Down N Dirty for many years. It's sanctioned NAFA/ASA/USSSA or whichever way the wind is blowing, but it's always the top teams. 16 fields in a small area make it a great place for a huge tournament and although there are national berths at stake, it's more about the prestige of winning that tournament than it is about securing your berth there. It's the one tournament where the competition is good enough that the better clubs don't have to play an age up at around here.

Looking In, I hardly think USSSA has the market cornered on bonehead umpires.
Every man lives by a code:
1.Always look cool
2.Never get lost
3.If you get lost, look cool
