CIF Softball ByLaw Change 2011

by rbi » Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:19 am

I had heard through a local HS/TB coach that beginning in 2011 you will no longer be able to coach both TB and HS ball, it will be one or the other. NOW after talking to a local Section Official he said that it was motioned at Board of Managers Meeting but has been tabled until the next meeting, at which time there will be more discussion. I myself know that if it is done anytime in the future the CIF will have made a HUGE mistake and will lose a LOT of very good coachs, and I think that is what they are hearing and that is why it has been tabled. What are peoples thoughts on this matter, or does someone have a CIF mole that can give us more info??

I know that there are some sports that last year received approval to have travel/club coaches, coach HS teams as there was not enough qualified coaching in that field (i.e. waterpolo).

I think that if this came out, many of the CIF sections could fight this.

Do you mean to say that any travel ball coach that currently is a head coach, assistant coach, any division, could not coach High School? What if they coach 10U travel? I'm curious what the reasoning is/would be to not allow a travel ball coach coach High School? I don't get it...would like more details on this "tabled" motion when you know... sounds stupid to me.

What would make sense to me would be to restrict a HS coach from being able to coach his HS players in the offseason, too easy for HS coach to put unwanted pressure on kids to play for that coach in the summer and the threat of it affecting their HS season would be implicit even if the coach had the best intentions. That wouldn't prevent the HS coach from coaching incoming freshman in the summer (or younger) and also wouldn't prevent the coach from working with an older travel team as long as they didn't consist of his HS players.

We had the local HS league ban coach contact over 4th of July weekend in order to provide some relief to some players who were being pressured into going with their HS coach over that weekend to play in the college exposure tournaments. Don't get me wrong. I think those tournaments can be great for some kids, but how many kids on the average HS roster really want to spend $2000 on a weekend of softball over 4th of July?? Why not let the serious kids on your HS team join up with other kids of similar interest and travel to those events together, instead of dragging some kids kicking and screaming somewhere they don't want to be.

In Sacramento there are a few league nights at one field site that some of the HS teams played in as part of their Fall program. It was a mix of HS and a few newer TB teams with open rosters/substitutions.

I believe the coach at Santana High here in SD plays as "Legacy" with all of his freshmen or sophomores during Fall/Winter to have them better prepared for the high school season.

It's always puzzled me, thinking if the players/parents are "pressured" to play with him or be outcast come high school season.

I think my DD's high school coach could care less as long as his players are playing Travel on competitive teams.

If CIF, doesn't allow travel ball coaches to coach in HS you will probably see a lot of girls just play travel year round instead of wasting their time with some wanna be softball coach in HS. At the end of the day, if any of our DD's want to play at the next level they're not getting their opportunity by being the star shortstop on Little Sisters of the Poor Catholic School.

Yes there are a few HS coaches that are succesful and do not coach a TB team. There are alot more succesful ones that do coach TB teams... I know I would love for my DD HS team to have a TB coach that could help her and get her better. Not just a teacher collecting a stypen.

Succesful TB coaches coaching HS:
Rob Weil, Dan Hay, Doug Myers, Eli Ginnis, Mark Campbell, Troy Ybarra, Bob Schultz, Randy Kirker, Joe Wedell, Mike Rogers, Art Lilly, Rick Hopkins, and I am sure Many Many more.
