Even at qualifiers, you win a few to qualify, then don't play it out.
There should be one tournament that you play to win, from beginning to end every game matters.
Seems one week out of the year, college coaches would want to see kids who can show up and go 100% from day one. They won't get practice games in the NCAA tournament.
This is pretty much what I heard from the college coaches I spoke with. Some college coaches may totally disagree (obviously, I didn't talk to every coach) but I did talk to quite a few who all said they wanted to see the kids play in pressure situations that meant something and they felt the seedings separated some of the weaker teams.
Playing Devil's advocate, I had a top Pac-10 coach tell me that she was watching a young player pitching at the 18G level in Colorado. The pitcher got into a little trouble (walked one, gave up a hit, then there was an error to load the bases) and she was actually happy to see how she dealt with the pressure of bases loaded, 2 outs, and the TB coach took her out. She was disappointed because she wanted to see that situation.
If it was pool play and didn't matter, she might have seen that situation but overall, I think they have communicated that they want to see the best players playing for something. I have heard coaches all year long complain about the "showcase" format.
