Proper way to appeal?

Playing on a field with no fences. Nobody on, batter hits a ball over the outfielder's head. BR misses first base and is all the way around before the ball gets back in to the pitcher.
What is the proper way to appeal the missed base and is there more than one way to do it?

Live ball appeal - Defense can touch the base (with ball in hand) which is being appealed or tag the runner if still in the field of play and inform the umpire of the appeal;

Dead ball appeal - Request time and verbalize the appeal to the umpire. If dead ball appeal, wait until runner has obviously completed their running assignments or has left the field of play.

Thanks, I thought you could do it either way.
We utilized the first method and were successful on the appeal. Umpire later informed us she missed third as well. We were on the first base side and our players in the dugout caught it. I guess sometimes they do pay attention during the game.

That's funny! There are only four to touch! How do you miss half the bases???

Who can verbalize and who can't.

Any infielder for last year, this coming year they changed it to any defender. Although what usually happens is so many people are soon saying it (even the guy getting his hot dog who wasnt even watching), its hard to distinguish who exactly is making the appeal , so you just rule on it.


I'll also add that in JO ball, appeals for missing bases are much rarer than missing the bases. Probably less than 1 in 10 times you see a missed base does someone actually appeal. Many times this year I saw players even miss home, and no appeal. This is juxtaposed to mens ball where they appeal a missed base on GP virtually anytime someone has ran for extra bases
